Effects of Irradiation on the Optical Absorption and Photoconductivity of Rutile

Description: Optical absorption and photoconductivity measurements have been made on single crystals of pure synthetic rutile (TiO2). Reactor irradiations at 70°C totaling 4.8 x 10 18 nvt fast and 1.69 x10 19 nvt slow did not produce any discernible optical absorption bands; however, the transmission decreased 5 percent at all wavelengths. Reactor irradiation induced a [illegible] five photoconduction peaks in the wavelength range 4200 to 14,000 A. In addition the photopeak at 4065 A (3.05 eV) was enhanced … more

Summary Hazards Report on Enriched Fuel Element Loading for the BNL Research Reactor

Description: Report issued by the Brookhaven National Laboratory discussing a hazards report on replacing the research center's current fuel elements with new highly enriched elements. As stated in the introduction, "this report is a summary of the studies, both theoretical and experimental, which have been made so far of the nuclear properties of the "new" pile, of the stability of the new fuel elements, and of the safety and practicability of operation of the "new" pile" (p. 2). This report includes table… more

The Radiolysis and Pyrolysis of Several Polyaromatic Compounds

Description: The radiolysis of several polyaromatic compounds which might be used as coolant material in a reactor was investigated using both gamma and reactor radiation. The compounds selected were naphthalene, anthracene, naphthacene, pyrene, phenanthrene, 1, 2 benzanthracene, chrysene, triphenylene, 9, 10 dihydrophenanthrene, phenazine, 7, 8, benzoquinoline and m-phenanthroline, in addition to the uncondensed ring compounds, biphenyl, ortho, meta and para terphenyl and bibenzyl. Gas yields, percentage d… more
