Progressive Epithelial Dysplasia in Mouse Skin Irradiated with 10 MeV Protons

Description: It has been previously reported that within twenty days following bombardment of mice 10 MeV protons (as well as with 20 MeV deuterons and 40 MeV alpha particles) that atypical epithelial hyperplasia developed without underlying recognizable vascular or collagen alterations as predisposing factors. The source of these monoenergetic accelerator-produced heavy ionizing particles was the 60-inch cyclotron of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The technique employed utilized a variable-thickness f… more

A High-Current Radio-Frequency Ion Accellerator

Description: Abstract: "A radio-frequency ion accelerator is described which is capable of continuous currents of protons of 250 ma at an energy of 500 kev. The beam is less than 3 in. in diameter and has a divergence of less than 2 degree half angle. Operation of the machine accelerating deuterons to an energy of 1000 kev is also described."

The Stopping Power of Amorphous and Channelled Silicon at All Energies as Computed with the Binary Encounter Approximation

Description: This thesis utilizes the binary encounter approximation to calculate the stopping power of protons penetrating silicon. The main goal of the research was to make predictions of the stopping power of silicon for low-energy and medium-energy channelled protons, in the hope that this will motivate experiments to test the theory developed below. In attaining this goal, different stopping power theories were compared and the binary encounter approach was applied to random (non-channelled) and high-e… more
