A Gauge-Invariant Energy Variational Principle Application to Anisotropic Excitons in High Magnetic Fields

Description: A new method is developed for treating atoms and molecules in a magnetic field in a gauge-invariant way using the Rayleigh-Ritz energy variational principle. The energy operator depends on the vector potential which must be chosen in some gauge. Measurement of the Effect of an Axial Magnetic Field on the Reynolds Number of Transition in Mercury Flowing Through a Glass Tube

Description: Note presenting experiments conducted to determine the effect of a strong axial magnetic field on the flow of mercury through a circular channel. The magnetic induction was 15,000 gauss, and the channel was a pyrex tube 17-1/4 inches long and 0.027 inch inside diameter. On flow of electrically conducting fluids over a flat plate in the presence of a transverse magnetic field

Description: The use of a magnetic field to control the motion of electrically conducting fluids is studied. The incompressible boundary-layer solutions are found for flow over a flat plate when the magnetic field is fixed relative to the plate or to the fluid. Electrostatic equilibria of non-neutral plasmas confined in a Penning trap with axially varying magnetic field

Description: This article describes a procedure for computing the electrostatic equilibria of non-neutral plasmas in a Penning trap with a nonuniform magnetic field by solving Poisson's equation using an iterative method. Plasma equilibria in a model Penning trap with high and low field regions are computed. The plasma is assumed to follow the Boltzmann density distribution along magnetic field lines.

Space-charge-based electrostatic plasma confinement involving relaxed plasma species

Description: In this article, a numerical study is reported on the equilibrium properties of a surface-emitted or edge-confined non-drifting plasma. A self-consistent finite-differences evaluation of the electrostatic potential is carried out for a non-neutral plasma that follows a Boltzmann density distribution.

Artificially structured boundary plasma trap

Description: This article presents a computer simulation of single-species non-neutral plasma confinement using an artificially structured boundary. The results support the prospect of developing plasma space-charge based confinement, with an unmagnetized plasma of one species of charged particles confined by an electric field produced by an edge-confined plasma of a second species of charged particles.

Closed-form expressions for the magnetic fields of rectangular and circular finite-length solenoids and current loops

Description: This article discusses closed-form expressions for the magnetic fields produced by rectangular- and circular-shaped finite-length solenoids and current loops. The closed-form expression for the magnetic field of a rectangular-shaped finite-length solenoid is derived using the Biot–Savart law. Closed-form expressions for the magnetic fields of solenoids and current loops can be used to avoid approximations in analytical models and may reduce computation time in computer simulations.

Examination of Magnetic Plasma Expulsion

Description: Magnetic plasma expulsion uses a magnetic field distortion to redirect incident charged particles around a certain area for the purposes of shielding. Computational studies are carried out and for certain values of magnetic field, magnetic plasma expulsion is found to effectively shield a sizable area. There are however many plasma behaviors and interactions that must be considered. Applications to a new cryogenic antimatter trap design are discussed.

Giant increase in cross-magnetic-field transport rate as an electron-positron plasma cools

Description: The article focuses on a study of an electron-positron plasma in thermal equilibrium within a uniform magnetic field using a classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulation. The cross-magnetic-field single-particle diffusion coefficient is evaluated as a function of the magnetic field strength and plasma temperature. The Magnetic Road: A New Form of Transport

Acceleration of Deuterons or Alpha Particles in the AGS

Description: The magnetic field of the AGS ring can contain particles of magnetic rigidity about 34 Bv/c. This includes not only protons of kinetic energy 33 Bev, but also 32 Bev deuterons, 64 Bev alpha particles, and conceivably heavier nuclei such as 188 Bev carbon nuclei.
