Morphology of Azotobacter Vinelandii Grown on Nutrient Agar

Description: This research deals with the changes in cellular morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii cultured on nutrient agar. In particular, this study is concerned with the formation of intracellular particles and a description of their size and sequence of appearance. Changes in morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii grown on nutrient agar are contrasted photographically with morphology of Azotobacter vinelandii grown on Burk's nitrogen free medium.

Effects of Lysolecithin on Macrophages

Description: The effect of lysolecithin on the macrophage was studied using five macrophage function assays. The results of indicate that lyso lecithin is a macrophage activating agent which causes enhanced cell spreading, increased phagocytosis of sheep erythrocytes, heightened membrane activity in the presence of damaged autologous red blood cells, chemotaxis, and vigorous phagocytosis and intracellular killing of Staphylococcus albus.

Studies on Malic Enzyme from Hymenolepis Diminuta

Description: Malic enzyme from the rat tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, has been purified 320-fold to a final specific activity of 29.4. The purification procedure included heat treatment, followed by column chromatography with Sephadex G-20, two phosphocellulose columns, and Sephadex G-200, respectively. The final purified enzyme appeared to be homogeneous on disc gel electrophoresis and G-200 gel filtration.

Capillary Permeability to Macromolecules at Normal and Hypobaric Pressure

Description: The purpose of this investigation was to study the effects of decreased barometric pressure on the transcapillary movement of molecules by monitoring the macromolecular capillary permeability with lymph derived primarily from the hepatic and gastrointestinal regions of the dog.

An Ecological Survey of the Herpetofauna of Palo Pinto County, Texas

Description: The purpose of this research was to compile a presence list of reptiles and amphibians that occur in Palo Pinto County, Texas, and to investigate the ecological distributions and zoogeographic affinities of these herpetiles. The study area was chosen primarily because of its location in North Central Texas and its rugged topography, which sets it apart from the surrounding area.

Microbial Activity in "Overland Flow" Industrial Waste Treatment

Description: One of the major problems of modern industries concerns the disposal of waste materials without the concomitant pollution of the environment. Several food and wood products industries have solved this problem by using the "overland flow" method of waste treatment. The research described in this paper was undertaken to ascertain the fact that the waste purification occurring on the disposal field is the result of microbial activities in the soil, and to study the transformations taking place.

Isolation and Partial Characterization of Carotenoid Pigments of Mycobacterium Rhodochrous

Description: It was the purpose of this investigation to isolate and characterize the pigments of Mycobacterium rhodochrous by partition behavior, chromatographic data, and absorption spectra. In addition, it was the purpose to determine whether or not the type of pigments found in M. rhodochrous is typical of those found in other mycobacteria.

Biological Indices of Stream Pollution

Description: A thorough biological survey and evaluation is a lengthy and expensive project. The number of technically trained persons required prevent its use by most public agencies. Since public health departments are the groups most frequently concerned with measuring the effects of pollution in streams, a need exists for a simplified method of sanitary survey. Recognizing this need, the Texas Health Department assigned the writer the problem of devising a method of survey which would require a field pa… more

Morphological and Physiological Changes in Micrococcus Pyogenes Var. Aureus during Development of its Resistance to Terramycin

Description: The problem in this investigation consists of, first, the procurement of several strains of Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus; second, the comparison of the degree and rate of development of resistance of these organisms to terramycin; and, third, to study the morphological and physiological changes which occur during the development of resistance.

A Possible Relationship Between Photosynthesis and the Respiratory Rise in Diseased Leaves

Description: To determine whether the rate of photosynthesis as well as the rate of respiration changes in infected green leaves, the rates of both of these processes were measured in infected and non-infected leaves of a barley variety highly susceptible to E. graminis var. hordei. At the same time, the activities of various enzymes catalyzing both photosynthetic and respiratory reactions were compared in homogenates of green leaves. Further, the activities of various respiratory enzymes were measured in h… more

Physical and Chemical Properties of Particles

Description: Electron microscopy is invaluable in determining the organization of the bacterial cell. In Fig. 1 we see an electron micrograph of a thin section of a single cell of Escherichia coli. There are three prominent regions: (1) the bacterial membrane, (2) the centrally located sparse region in which thin fibrils of DNA are located, and (3) the main body of the cell with densely packed particles. All the particles in the latter area are probably ribosomes. This paper will focus attention on the stru… more

Analysis of Cell Population Kinetics

Description: The relation between trace kinetic parameters of cell populations and the statistics used in studies on cell populations is discussed. It is pointed out that responses in cell populations are complex and subject to many perturbations. Some of these are discussed. It is concluded that a complete check list of sources of error is required for studies of great accuracy, and a calculus to help in combining heterogeneous data is needed for studies of systems of great complexity.

Testing New Measures of Age Independent Body Size in White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

Description: The four elements of the lower hind foot (calcaneus, metatarsal, naviculo-cuboid, and tibia) were tested for use as age-independent proxies of body size in white-tailed deer using known aged specimens from Ft. Hood Texas. Statistical analysis indicates that the calcaneum and the tibia are good proxies of age-independent body size in white-tailed deer. In addition to expanding the list of elements that can be used for studies of age-independent body size, these elements can also be used to age f… more

Degradation of Complex Carbon Compounds by Marine Actinomycetes

Description: The purpose of this paper is to present a comparative study of marine bacteria, molds and actinomycetes in regard to their ability to degrade certain pure and mixed complex compounds possibly occurring in the lagoon waste traps of the Texas Gulf Coast. This comparison was made using a differential oxygen uptake as the index of specific compound utilization.

Considerations in Selecting, Developing, and Validating Laboratory Experience Units in General Biology for Prospective Elementary School Teachers

Description: The primary purpose of this study was to develop the considerations and techniques for the selection, development, and validation of laboratory experience units in general biology for prospective elementary school teachers. The completed laboratory experience unites developed in this study may serve as resources of activities for college instructors who teach general biology to undergraduate majors in elementary education. For purposes of this study the laboratory experience unites were centere… more
