Life and Death in the Field: Farmer Suicide and the Necessity to Feed

Description: Farmer suicide is at crisis levels in the United States and India. This crisis is both a problem of experiential knowledge within infrastructure as well as a problem of discourse power. I argue that the logical abstraction required to conceptualize and evaluate farmer suicide cannot be separated from the overall experience of farmer suicide. Rather than existing as distinctly separate phenomena, these elements are co-constitutive. Despite the Centers' for Disease Control identification and des… more

Temperature Trends in the Lower Atmosphere: Steps for Understanding and Reconciling Differences

Description: This Synthesis and Assessment Product is an important revision to the conclusions of earlier reports from the U.S. National Research Council and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Previously reported discrepancies between the amount of warming near the surface and higher in the atmosphere have been used to challenge the reliability of climate models and the reality of human-induced global warming. Specifically, surface data showed substantial global-average warming, while early vers… more

Kinetic studies and computational modeling of atomic chlorine reactions in the gas phase.

Description: The gas phase reactions of atomic chlorine with hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, benzene, and ethylene are investigated using the laser flash photolysis / resonance fluorescence experimental technique. In addition, the kinetics of the reverse processes for the latter two elementary reactions are also studied experimentally. The absolute rate constants for these processes are measured over a wide range of conditions, and the results offer new accurate information about the reactivity and thermochemi… more

CRPL Exponential Reference Atmosphere

Description: From Introduction: "In this monograph, the background of the exponential reference atmosphere will be outlined and a set of radio ray tracings presented. These ray may be used for the solution of many problems involving refraction by means of the exponential reference atmosphere."

WCRP IPY activities

Description: On 1 March 2007, the International Polar Year 2007/2008, one of the most ambitious coordinated international science programmes was launched. Many of the IPY leaders and participants are members of WCRP projects and groups. Climate issues are at the forefront of the majority of IPY studies. This chart is a visualization of International Polar Year activities at the World Climate Research Program.

Report of the Ninth Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Description: The Panel at its ninth session would set the stage for the assessment process envisaged over the next two years. The panels also stressed the need for a high scientific and technical standard which would ensure the best information to decision-makers. The panel discussed and adopted various draft reports, including the draft work plan of working groups.

Determination of Traces of Uranium Metal by Decomposition of the Hydride

Description: Two methods were developed for the determination of uranium metal in UF3 with other fluoride compounds. A simplified method of determination which has a relatively high degree of precision (coefficient of variation 2 per cent) is carried out by decomposing the hydride in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and subsequently measuring the hydrogen over an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide. The ignition of the hydride in an atmosphere of oxygen and volumetric measurement of the water at reduced … more
