Resonance ionization mass spectrometry at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Description: Two approaches to RIMS will be discussed here. The first is the use of continuous-wave (cw) dye lasers as the ionization source. Continuous excitation effectively matches the ionization to the evaporation of sample from a resistively heated filament, providing for efficient use of the sample. In addition, cw ionization permits pulse counting detection, necessary for the measurement of large isotope ratios on small samples. In the cases of lutetium and technetium discussed below, average ionizat… more

Status of the lanthanides and actinides in the periodic table

Description: In extended discussions and correspondence with Ekkehard Fluck, the author was made aware of a problem with the Periodic Table, i.e., which element should be shown in the main table as the representative of the lanthanide series and the actinide series. In earlier discussion, he came to the conclusion that lanthanum and actinium are not the elements which should appear, but rather lutetium and lawrencium are more appropriate for inclusion in their place. This paper will attempt to justify the r… more

(Relative mobilities and transport mechanisms of trace elements during contact metamorphism of carbonate rocks). Progress report

Description: The main objective of this study is to investigate the relative mobilities and transport mechanisms of major, minor, and trace elements during the contact metamorphism of carbonate rocks. The large contrasts in chemical potentials of SiO/sub 2/, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and CaO across a granitic pluton-limestone contact may induce metasomatism. In addition, rare earth and transition metal elements may act as tracers, and their redistribution during metamorphism may record convective cooling processes… more

Self-diffusion of calcium and yttrium in pure and YF/sub 3/-doped CaF/sub 2/ single crystals

Description: Self-diffusion coefficients for Ca and Y were measured in pure and YF/sub 3/-doped CaF/sub 2/ crystals for dopant levels ranging from 2 to 10 mole %. Diffusion data were analyzed as a function of temperature and as a function of composition. Comparison of Arrhenius relationships for both Ca and Y showed that the activation energy for cation diffusion decreased approximately linearly as the YF/sub 3/ dopant level increased. Atomic jump pathways were considered and the decrease in the activation … more

Cyclic and Linear Polarization of Yttrium-Containing Iron-Based Amorphous Alloys

Description: Iron-based amorphous alloys are produced by rapid solidification from the melt. These alloys may possess unique mechanical and corrosion resistant properties. The chemical composition of the alloy may influence the cooling rate that is necessary for the alloys to be completely vitreous. At the same time, the corrosion resistance of the amorphous alloys may also depend on their chemical composition. This paper examines the anodic behavior of iron-based amorphous alloys containing three different… more

Design and Synthesis of Oriented Guest-Host Nanostructures for Enhanced Membrane Performances

Description: This project has demonstrated a novel nanomaterial design concept and a synthesis method for ''guesthost'' type superionic-conducting nanocomposite membranes. This concept consists of nanophases of oxide electrolyte nanograins (guest) encapsulated inside the nanopore channels of an oxide layer matrix (host), with channels oriented perpendicular to the layer surface. Using ionic conducting YSZ (yttrium stabilized zirconia) as a special case, we have shown that the host-guest design allows orient… more
