Electrodeposition of Diamond-like Carbon Films

Description: Electrodeposition of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films was studied on different substrates using two different electrochemical methods. The first electrochemical method using a three-electrode system was studied to successfully deposit hydrogenated DLC films on Nickel, Copper and Brass substrates. The as-deposited films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and cyclic vol… more

Ion Beam Synthesis of Binary and Ternary Transition Metal Silicide Thin Films

Description: Among the well-known methods to form or modify the composition and physical properties of thin films, ion implantation has shown to be a very powerful technique. In particular, ion beam syntheses of binary iron silicide have been studied by several groups. Further, the interests in transition metal silicide systems are triggered by their potential use in advanced silicon based opto-electronic devices. In addition, ternary silicides have been by far less studied than their binary counterparts de… more

MBE Growth and Characterization of Graphene on Well-Defined Cobalt Oxide Surfaces: Graphene Spintronics without Spin Injection

Description: The direct growth of graphene by scalable methods on magnetic insulators is important for industrial development of graphene-based spintronic devices, and a route towards substrate-induced spin polarization in graphene without spin injection. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction LEED, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) demonstrate the growth of Co3O4(111) and CoO(111) to thicknesses greater than 100 Å on Ru(0001) sur… more

Effects of covalency on the p-shell photoemission of transition metals: MnO

Description: This article discusses the effects of covalency on the p-shell photoemission of transition metals. The treatment of covalency has not been included previously in ab initio theoretical studies of the 2p-shell XPS of transition-metal complexes. In this work, covalent interactions between the metal and ligands are treated on an equal footing with spin-orbit splittings.

Investigation of growth kinetics of self-assembling monolayers by means of contact angle, optical ellipsometry, angle-resolved XPS and IR spectroscopy.

Description: Absorption of octadecanethiol and p-nitrobenzenethiol onto gold surfaces from ethanol solutions has been studied by means of contact angle, optical ellipsometry, angle-resolved XPS (ARXPS), and with grazing angle total reflection FTIR. Growth of the monolayers from dilute solutions has been monitored and Langmuir isotherm adsorption curves were fitted to experimental data. A saturated film is formed within approximately 5h after immersion in solutions of concentrations ranging from 0.0005mM to … more

Investigation of Structural and Optical Properties of Ag Nanoclusters Formed in Si(100) After Multiple Implantations of Low Energies Ag Ions and Post-Thermal Annealing at a Temperature Below the Ag-Si Eutectic Point

Description: This paper investigates the synthesis of Ag NCs in Si(100) substrate by implanting multiple energies and fluences of Ag ions and subsequent thermal annealing.

Surface Chemistry and Work Function of Irradiated and Nanoscale Thin Films Covered Indium Tin Oxides

Description: In this study, we used UV-ozone Ar sputtering, X-ray photoelectron and ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopies and sputtering based depositions of RuO2 and Se nano-layers on indium tin oxides (ITOs). We elucidated the effect of Ar sputtering on the composition and chemistry of Sn rich ITO surface. We demonstrated that while a combination of UV-ozone radiation and Ar sputtering removes most of the hydrocarbons responsible for degrading the work function of ITO, it also removes significant amou… more

Synthesis, Characterization, Structural, and Optical Properties of Zinc Oxide Nanostructures Embedded in Silicon Based Substrates

Description: Structural and optical properties of ZnO nanostructures synthesized by low energy ion implantation technique were examined. ZnO molecular ions were implanted into Si/SiO2 substrates at room temperature and then furnace annealed under different temperatures and environments. In all as-implanted samples only Zn nanostructures with varying diameters distributed into the Si/SiO2 matrices were observed. No trace of ZnO was found. The distributions of Zn nanostructures in Si/SiO2 closely matched resu… more

Sulfur-Based Organic Compounds as Novel Corrosion Inhibitors for Brass and Aluminum Alloy Protection in Acid Cleaning Solutions

Description: In this study, thiol and two disulfide compounds have been tested as new corrosion inhibitors for brass and aluminum alloys. Pyridine-2-thiol and 2,2'-dipyridyl disulfide were tested for brass alloys in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution and both inhibitors showed excellent corrosion protection against the aggressive corrosive ion attack. Both inhibitors adsorbed to brass surface forming a protective film via a chemisorption process. XPS studies showed formation of Cu-S bond which allows these molecules to c… more

Analysis of the Fe 2p XPS for hematite 𝛂 Fe2O3: Consequences of covalent bonding and orbital splittings on multiplet splittings

Description: Article analyzes the origins of the complex Fe 2p X-Ray Photoelectron Spectra (XPS) of hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) and is related to the character of the bonding in this compound. This analysis provides a new and novel view of the reasons for XPS binding energies (BEs) and BE shifts, which deepens the current understanding and interpretation of the physical and chemical significance of the XPS. This article is part of the JCP Special Topic on Oxide Chemistry and Catalysis.
