Investigation of simple daily solar radiation models suitable for use in the design of solar heating systems

Description: Solar heating system simulations typically require hourly weather data and the use of a main-line computer. A simpler alternative is to use daily steps with a model for daily solar collection. This report investigates the accuracy of sinusoidal radiation models for use in solar heating simulation. Accuracy of daily radiation models is assessed in two ways: by a theoretical comparison with hourly weather data, and by analysis of results of daily simulation. Results indicate that a daily radiatio… more

Rock bed storage with heat pump. Final report

Description: The study, Rock Bed Storage with Heat Pump, established the feasibility of mating a heat pump to a rock bed storage to effect optimal performance at the lowest cost in single family residences. The operating characteristics of off-the-shelf components of heat pump/rock bed storage systems were studied, and the results were used to formulate configurations of representative systems. These systems were modeled and subsequently analyzed using the TRNSYS computer program and a life cycle cost analy… more

Analysis of photovoltaic total energy systems for single family residential applications

Description: The performance and cost-effectiveness of three photovoltaic total energy system concepts designed to meet the thermal and electrical demands of a typical single family house are compared. The three photovoltaic total energy system concepts considered are: (1) All-photovoltaic systems. Passively air-cooled photovoltaic panels provide electricity to meet both electrical and thermal demands. (2) Separate-panel systems. Solar thermal panels provide thermal energy, while passively air-cooled photov… more

Environmental assessments of alternative energy strategies in the United States

Description: The Regional Issues Identification and Assessment (RIIA) program is an evaluation of the regional impacts of future energy development. These studies are conducted for the Department of Energy. The impacts described in this paper for 1990 are based on a national energy projection (scenario) that assumes medium energy demand and fuel supply through 1990, but does not incorporate the policies of the 1978 National Energy Act. The RIIA study plan uses the predicted fuel mixes derived from the PIES … more

Lifeline electric rates and alternative approaches to the problems of low-income ratepayers: ten case studies of rejected programs

Description: This volume, Volume 3, contains ten case studies of non-implemented programs. It is noted that in Volume 2, the implemented lifeline programs, evolved as policy closely after the 1973 oil embargo; in contrast, the rejected programs were initiated about 4 years later and considered in a more-complex policy environment - after which time alternate methods of assisting low-income people had been developed. Specifically presented here are program summary, issue development, governmental process, an… more

Energy-supply options for Soldier's Grove, Wisconsin. A summary of recommendations

Description: This report presents ANL's findings on energy supply options for Soldier's Grove, Wisconsin. Thirteen energy supply systems were considered. Although any of the systems could be used--at a price--Argonne recommends the new downtown be supplied by a wood-fired central heating plant with steam distribution. Although a list of the less desirable systems is provided, full details have been omitted here, but will be included in ANL's final report.

Solar availability for winter space heating: an analysis of the calendar period 1953-1975

Description: Solar availability for space heating has been determined from an analysis of SOLMET data tapes for eight US sites. The tapes contain hourly readings of insolation and ambient temperature for the period 1953-1975. Scatter-diagrams of insolation versus heating degree-days, compiled on a daily basis, indicate a wide variation in insolation levels, even during periods of coldest weather. For seven of the eight sites, the peak-day backup energy required by a solar space heating system exceeded 85% o… more

Economic and technical analysis of retrofit to cogenerating district energy systems: North-Central cities

Description: Six major US cities (Washington, DC, St. Louis, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Detroit, and Chicago) were studied to achieve reasonably accurate estimates of costs required to retrofit them with district energy systems. Demand estimates and energy-supply analyses are made, and component capital costs are estimated to arrive at annualized system costs. Finally, a comparison of alternative energy delivery options is made, and estimates of scarce-fuel savings are derived.
