Evaluation of a laser-induced fluorescence system for uranium analysis

Description: A laser-induced fluorescence method for total uranium analysis of industrial process waters, waste waters, and leachates has been evaluated as a possible alternative for the normal, sodium fluoride and lithium fluoride, flame-fusion fluorescence method currently employed. Since the lower reporting limit of the laser fluorometer is on the order of 0.05 ..mu..g/L, samples for normal analysis can usually be diluted from 100 to 1000 fold which virtually eliminates interferences from quenching subst… more

Attitude control of a spinning rocket via thrust vectoring

Description: Two controllers are developed to provide attitude control of a spinning rocket that has a thrust vectoring capability. The first controller has a single-input/single-output design that ignores the gyroscopic coupling between the control channels. The second controller has a multi-input/multi-output structure that is specifically intended to account for the gyroscopic coupling effects. A performance comparison between the two approached is conducted for a range of roll rates. Each controller is … more

Shifting Identities: A Qualitative Inquiry of Black Transgender Men's Experiences

Description: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore Black transgender men's experiences navigating systems of racism and transphobia. To this end, I utilized a critical race theory and intersectionality theory framework to answer the following question: What are Black transgender men's experiences with power, privilege, and oppression? The ten Black transgender men and transmasculine people who participated in this study provided detailed and moving accounts of their expe… more

Description: A revised multigroup cross-section library based on Release 3 of ENDF/B-VI data has been produced and tested for light-water-reactor shielding and reactor pressure vessel dosimetry applications. This new broad-group library, which is designated BUGLE-96, represents an improvement over the BUGLE-93 data library released in February 1994 and replaces the data package for BUGLE-93 in the Radiation Safety Information Computational Center (formerly RSIC). The processing methodology is the same as th… more

Development of the ENDF/B-VI Atom Displacement Cross Sections for Iron

Description: The atom displacement (dpa) cross sections for iron given in the ASTM Standard Practice E6 693 are based on the data from ENDF/B-IV the cross sections have been changed considerably. In particular for iron, ENDF/B-VI gives cross-section evaluations for the individual isotopes with more forward-directed inelastic scattering, and reduced magnitude of the inelastic scattering at high energies. This report provides the displacement cross sections for iron generated from the ENDF/B-VI data and docum… more

Oxygen electrode reaction in molten carbonate fuel cells. Final report, September 15, 1987--September 14, 1990

Description: Molten carbonate fuel cell system is a leading candidate for the utility power generation because of its high efficiency for fuel to AC power conversion, capability for an internal reforming, and a very low environmental impact. However, the performance of the molten carbonate fuel cell is limited by the oxygen reduction reaction and the cell life time is limited by the stability of the cathode material. An elucidation of oxygen reduction reaction in molten alkali carbonate is essential because… more

Synthesis, Characterization and Testing of Novel Anode and Cathode Materials for Li-Ion Batteries

Description: During this program we have synthesized and characterized several novel cathode and anode materials for application in Li-ion batteries. Novel synthesis routes like chemical doping, electroless deposition and sol-gel method have been used and techniques like impedance, cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycling have been used to characterize these materials. Mathematical models have also been developed to fit the experimental result, thus helping in understanding the mechanisms of these ma… more

Fabrication of tungsten--uranium dioxide honeycomb structures. Phase I. Summary report

Description: Declassified 28 Aug 1973. W--20 vol% U0/sub 2/ honeycomb structures were successfully made by two fabrication methods. One method involved stacking of individual unsintered hexagonal tubes, followed by isostatic pressing and sintering. The other method formed the unsintered honeycomb as a unit which was then sintered. The sintered structures, eonsisting of a close array of 1-1/2 in. long hexagonal channels, had densities ranging from 94 to >97% of theoretical. In addition to honeycomb fabricati… more

Properties of Low-Carbon N-155 Alloy Bar Stock From 1200 to 1800 Degrees Fahrenheit

Description: Memorandum presenting the results of an investigation to establish rupture and total-deformation strengths at 1200 and 1800 degrees Fahrenheit for typical commercial treatments of low-carbon N-155 alloy. The results show that there were large differences in strength between the heats of bar stock at temperatures above 1200 degrees Fahrenheit except when a 2200 degree Fahrenheit solution treatment was used.

Mathematical model of a NiOOH/metal hydride cell. Final report, September 15, 1993--November 14, 1996

Description: One of the objectives of work on the nickel/metal hydride cell has been to develop a mathematical model of the performance of the cell. This is a summary of work to date and is meant to be a Final Report of the BES project. Mathematical model of the nickel/metal hydride cell depends on the kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport properties of the metal hydride electrode. Consequently, investigations were carried out to determine: (1) the exchange current density and the equilibrium potential as… more
