Stability of Airplanes

Description: The author attempts to correct the misconception that piloting an airplane requires extraordinary skill and balance. He also tries to show that airplanes are extremely stable in flight. Some of the major points covered in this article include: automatic pilots, airplanes designed to be stable, and the reliance on mathematics to help in designing stable aircraft.

Specializing for Record-Breaking

Description: This report seeks to determine what constitutes airplane performance and what line should be followed in seeking to break records if the designer is given a free hand. Some of the considerations for designers include the ratio of engine power to wing area, minor refinements, low wing loading, and duration.

Seaplanes for Commerce

Description: The advantages of using seaplanes for commercial purposes is discussed. The three primary advantages described include their superior speeds over existing means of transport on the same routes, the available landing fields when flying over the water, and the reduction of distance from the airport to the city is serves due to the seaplane's ability to land in water.

The Disposal of Military Aircraft

Description: "The end of the war saw every belligerent with vast stocks of aircraft and aircraft supplies in all stages of usefulness, much of the material being absolutely new. The question of the best method of getting rid of this accumulation is one which has been agitating those responsible for its disposal for more than three years now, but no wholly satisfactory solution has yet been reached" (p. 1).
