The lifetime probability tag measurement of R{sub b} using the SLD

Description: The authors present a new measurement of R{sub b} = {Lambda}{sub Z{degree}{yields}b{anti b}}/{Lambda}{sub Z{degree}{yields}hadrons} using a lifetime double tag on 150k hadronic Z{degree} events collected from the SLD 1993 and 1994 runs. The method utilizes the high precision 3-D position measurements provided by the CCD vertex detector and the small stable SLC beams to obtain a b hemisphere tagging efficiency of 31% for a purity of 94%. The b-Hemisphere tagging efficiency is measured from the d… more

VXD3: The SLD Vertex Detector Upgrade Based on a 307 MPixel CCD System

Description: The SLD upgrade CCD vertex detector (VXD3) is described. Its 307 million pixels are assembled from 96 3.2 Mpixel CCDs of 13 cm{sup 2} each. The system has evolved from the pioneering CCD vertex detector VXD2, which has operated in SLD since 1992. The CCDs of VXD3 are mounted on beryllium ladders in three cylinders, providing three space point measurements along each track of about 5 microns resolution in all three co-ordinates. Significant improvements are achieved with VXD3 in impact parameter… more

The production of {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p, k{sup 0} and {Lambda}{sup 0} in hadronic Z{sup 0} decays

Description: The authors have measured production fractions and spectra for {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p, and production spectra for K{sup 0} and {Lambda}{sup 0} in both hadronic Z{sup 0} decays and a Z{sup 0} {yields} light quark (uds) subset at SLD. The SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector was used to identify charged hadrons. The CCD vertex detector was used to select the enriched uds sample. For the global sample, the results are consistent with previous experiments. The authors observe a clear flav… more

Surface and interface electronic structure: Final report, December 1, 1994--November 30, 1995

Description: A year and a half ago, we terminated our operations at the National Synchrotron Light Source and moved our research program to the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley. This move was motivated primarily by the exciting possibilities and research directions made possible by operation at the newer ALS facility. The ALS facility was commissioned in October 1993. We are members of a `Participating Research Team` (PRT) associated with undulator beamline 7.0 at the ALS. This beamline was commissioned fo… more

Monitoring interfacial dynamics by pulsed laser techniques. Final report

Description: The research is aimed at understanding the structural, electronic, and reactive properties of semiconductors in solutions. Focus is on Si and GaAs surfaces because they are used in photovoltaic devices, etc. The pulsed laser techniques used included surface second harmonic generation in Si and laser induced photoluminescence in GaAs. SHG can measure space charge effects in the semiconductor under various conditions, ie, immersed in electrolyte, in presence of oxide overlayers, and under UHV con… more

Measurement of the B+ and B0 Lifetimes With Topological Vertexing at SLD

Description: The lifetimes of the B{sup +} (B{sub u}) and B{sup 0} (B{sub d}) mesons have been measured using a sample of 150,000 hadronic Z{sup 0} decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC between 1993 and 1995. The analysis reconstructs the decay length and charge of the B meson using a novel topological technique. This method results in a high statistics sample of 6,033 (3,665) charged (neutral) vertices. The ratio of B{sup +}:B{sup 0} decays in the charged (neutral) sample is 1.8:1 (1:2.3).

Measurement of the Z{sup 0}-Lepton Coupling Asymmetries A{sub l}

Description: The authors present direct measurements of the Z{sup 0}-lepton coupling asymmetries, A{sub e}, A{sub {mu}}, and A{sub {tau}}. It is based on a data sample selected from 170 k Z{sup 0} decays collected by the SLD detector. The Z`s are produced by collisions of polarized e{sup {minus}} with unpolarized e{sup +} bunches at SLC. The couplings are extracted from the measurement of the left-right forward-backward asymmetry for each lepton species. The preliminary results (using information from all l… more

A Preliminary Improved Test of the Flavor Independence of Strong Interactions

Description: The authors present an improved comparison of the strong couplings of gluons to light (u, d, and s), c, and b quarks, determined from multijet rates in flavor-tagged samples of hadronic Z{sup 0} decays recorded with the SLC Large Detector at the SLAC Linear Collider between 1993 and 1995. Flavor separation on the basis of lifetime and decay multiplicity differences among hadrons containing light, c, and b quarks was made using the SLD precision tracking system, yielding tags with high purity an… more

Description: The authors have measured the production rates as a function of scaled energy x of prompt charmed pseudoscalar D{sup {+-}} and vector D*{sup {+-}} mesons in hadronic Z{sup 0} decays. The prompt signal components were isolated from the background of D mesons from B hadron decays using impact parameters of reconstructed D{sup {+-}} {yields} K{sup {minus_plus}}{pi}{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup {+-}} and D*-daughter D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +} and D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi… more

Final Report: Design & Evaluation of Energy Efficient Modular Classroom Structures Phase II / Volume I-VII, January 17, 1995 - October 30, 1999

Description: We are developing innovations to enable modular builders to improve the energy performance of their classrooms with no increase in first cost. The Modern Building Systems' (MBS) classroom building conforms to the stringent Oregon energy code, and at $18/ft{sup 2} ($1.67/m{sup 2}) (FOB the factory) it is at the low end of the cost range for modular classrooms. We have investigated daylighting, cross-ventilation, solar preheat of ventilation air, air-to-air heat exchanger, electric lighting contr… more

Architectural Design Criteria for F-Block Metal Ion Sequestering Agents

Description: The objective of this project is to provide the means to optimize ligand architecture for f-block metal recognition. Our strategy builds on an innovative and successful molecular modeling approach in developing polyether ligand design criteria for the alkali and alkaline earth cations. The hypothesis underlying this proposal is that differences in metal ion binding with multidentate ligands bearing the same number and type of donor groups are primarily attributable to intramolecular steric fact… more
