Multidisciplinary research program directed toward utilization of solar energy through bioconversion of renewable resources. Progress report

Description: Progress is reported in four research areas of solar bioconversion. The first program deals with the genetic selection of superior trees, physiological basis of vigor, tissue culture, haploid cell lines, and somatic hybridization. The second deals with the physiology of paraquat-induced oleoresin biogenesis. Separate abstracts were prepared for the other two program areas: biochemical basis of paraquat-induced oleoresin production in pines and biochemistry of methanogenesis. (JSR)

Error contours for Student's t under nonnormality

Description: Geary (Biometrika 34, 1947) has introduced a differential series for the density function of Student's t under nonnormality where the sample population is assumed to have finite moments up to a certain order. If (K/sub r/) and (K'/sub r/) are the cumulants of t under the two regimes (normality and nonnormality), then the discrepancies (K/sub r/--K'/sub r/) can be ordered with respect to sample size, in an ordering in powers of 1/..sqrt..n(n = sample size) of the modified density … more

Properties and Regulation of Biosynthesis of Cottonseed Storage Proteins. Comprehensive Progress Report, December 1, 1976 to September 1, 1979

Description: The regulation of gene expression in cotton seed embryogenesis was studied by attempting to define what gene products are likely to be highly regulated during this developmental progression. The flow of nitrogen into the free amino acids pools of the developing cotyledons, and into the principal nitrogen nutritional reserve of the seed, the storage proteins was measured. This was continued by following the flow of nitrogen from the storage proteins to the principal exported amino acid asparagin… more

Study of matter current effects in two-body inelastic collisions

Description: At the present time no comprehensive model of high energy hadronic scattering exists. Most of the existing models have a very restricted range of application. The geometrical model of hadronic scattering proposed by Chou and Yang has had great success in predicting high energy scattering phenomena. For example, the dip in pp elastic scattering, and pion and kaon radii were quite accurately predicted by the model. Use of pp differential cross section data also yields an excellent fit of the meas… more

Cesium-134 and Strontium-85 Turnover Rates in the Centipede Scolopocryptops Nigridia McNeill

Description: Radioactive tracers are providing significant information about the ecology of food chains, including such phenomena as accumulation of radioactive fission products, movement of materials along food chains, assimilation and ingestion rates, and nutrient accumulation and turnover. In this study the ingestion, assimilation and turnover to two radioactive tracers were investigated for Scolopocryptops nigridia, an abundant species in forests of the southeastern United States. The two tracers utiliz… more

Inexpensive Weir and Proportional Sampler for Miniature Watershed Ecosystems

Description: A weir system with proportional sampler for use on miniature water-shed ecosystems is described. Eight weir collection systems were evaluated for their ability to measure and sample the inputs and outputs of soil-island ecosystems which occur on granite outcrops. The proportion of water actually collected by the weir systems was generally less than the proportion the systems were designed to sample, but adequate for supplying data needed for estimating elemental budgets. The weir systems were n… more

Nutrient Budgets of Rock Outcrop Ecosystems and Their Response to Selected Perturbations

Description: The objective was to test the hypothesis that destruction of a biotic compartment of an ecosystem will increase system nutrient loss. Four ecosystems were described and their input-output budgets monitored. The vegetation of one ecosystem was killed with an herbicide. In another, an insecticide eliminated arthropods. The remaining two were controls.

Radioactive Tracer Studies of Soil and Litter Arthropod Food Chains. Progress Report, November 1, 1978-October 31, 1979

Description: Research on soil and litter arthropod food chains, concerning measurement of nutrient flow using radioisotope techniques and investigations of the role of soil arthropods as regulators of the ecosystem-level processes of decomposition and mineralization of nutrients is described. Laboratory measurements of radiotracer turnover by predaceous macroarthropods are reported, as well as the status of research with microarthropod turnover of radioactive tracers. Implications of results are evaluated i… more

Comparison of Mineral Element Cycling Under Till and No-Till Practices: An Experimental Approach to Agroecosystems Analysis

Description: In this paper we give an overview of a research project which is attempting to integrate the approaches of agronomy and ecosystem ecology. We are attempting to apply methodologies and approaches of ecosystem study, in particular nutrient cycling, as a means of evaluating performance of agronomic systems. Specifically, we are comparing structure, function, and nutrient dynamics in a set of no-tillage and conventional plots.

Comparison of Soil Surface Arthropod Populations in Conventional Tillage, No-tillage and Old Field Systems

Description: Soil surface arthropod populations in conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) sorghum and adjacent old field (OF) were compared using pitfall trap captures. Total numbers of individuals and species, overall diversity (anti H), richness (D), evenness (J'), dominance (C) and similarity quotients (QS) between systems were calculated for each of seven 24 hour sampling periods throughout the season. Although each system was distinct (any two of the systems had less than 30 percent of their spe… more

Improved methods for measuring radioactive tracer accumulation and excretion by microarthropods, with applications for a mite species, Tyrophagus longior (Acarina, Acaridae)

Description: Radioisotope retention measurements of /sup 85/Sr and /sup 51/Cr in Tyrophagus longior (Gervais) (Acari: Acaridae) were fit to 2 and 1 component models. Biological half-life for the rapid component of both radioisotopes was about 10 hours, with assimilation of /sup 85/Sr being 62%. The identification of /sup 51/Cr turnover as gut clearance must remain tentative. An inexpensive disposable culture chamber for measuring radioisotope retention in microarthropods is described along with details of m… more

Mineral Cycling in Soil and Litter Arthropod Food Chains. Progress Report, November 1, 1979-October 31, 1980

Description: Recent progress and current status are reported for research concerned with mineral element dynamics in soil arthropod food chains. Research is performed within the larger context of terrestrial decomposition systems, in which soil arthropods may act as regulators of nutrient dynamics during decomposition. Research is measuring rates of nutrient accumulation and excretion by using radioactive tracer techniques with radioactive analogs of nutrients. Experimental measurement of radioactive tracer… more

Uranium Resource Assessment Through Statistical Analysis of Exploration Geochemical and Other Data. Final Report. [Codes Eval, Sure]

Description: We have developed a procedure that can help quadrangle evaluators to systematically summarize and use hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance (HSSR) and occurrence data. Although we have not provided an independent estimate of uranium endowment, we have devised a methodology that will provide this independent estimate when additional calibration is done by enlarging the study area. Our statistical model for evaluation (system EVAL) ranks uranium endowment for each quadrangle. Becaus… more

Shorting Time of Magnetically Insulated Reflex-ion Diodes from the Neutral-Atom Charge-Exchange Mechanism

Description: In a magnetically insulated diode, collision-free electrons return to the cathode and no electron current is present at the anode. Electron transport to the anode is studied in this paper. Steady-state space-charge-limited flow is assumed initially. Breakdown of ion flow occurs when static neutral atoms at the anode undergo charge exchange, which results in neutral atoms drifting across the diode. These are subsequently ionized by reflexing ions producing electrons trapped in Larmor orbits thro… more
