Contributions on the Mechanics of Boundary-Layer Transition

Description: "The manner in which flow in a boundary layer becomes turbulent was investigated on a flat plate at wind speeds generally below 100 feet per second. Hot-wire techniques were used, and many of the results are derived from oscillograms of velocity fluctuations in the transition region. Following a presentation of the more familiar aspects of transition, there are presented the very revealing facts discovered while studying the characteristics of artificially produced turbulent spots" (p. 853).

Development of craze and impact resistance in glazing plastics by multiaxial stretching

Description: The loss of strength of cast polymethyl methacrylate plastic as a result of crazing is of considerable importance to the aircraft industry. Because of the critical need for basic information on the nature of crazing and the effects of various treatments and environmental conditions on its incidence and magnitude, an investigation of this phenomenon was undertaken. The following factors were examined: (1) the effect of stress-solvent crazing on tensile strength of polymethyl methacrylate; (2) th… more

Characteristics of Turbulence in Boundary Layer with Zero Pressure Gradient

Description: "The results of an experimental investigation of a turbulent boundary layer with zero pressure gradient are presented. Measurements with the hot-wire anemometer were made of turbulent energy and turbulent shear stress, probability density and flattening factor of u-fluctuation (fluctuation in x-direction), spectra of turbulent energy and shear stress, and turbulent dissipation. The importance of the region near the wall and the inadequacy of the concept of local isotropy are demonstrated" (p. 1… more

Heat-Loss Characteristics of Hot-Wire Anemometers at Various Densities in Transonic and Supersonic Flow

Description: Note presenting an experimental investigation of the heat-loss characteristics of heated fine wires suitable for use as anemometers in turbulence research. The effects of each of the several variables on the heat-loss characteristics of both normally oriented and swept wires were measured. The temperature-loading effects were found to cause large sensitivity differences between constant-temperature and constant-current operation.

Bending With Large Deflection of a Clamped Rectangular Plate With Length-Width Ratio of 1.5 Under Normal Pressure

Description: "The Von Karman equations for a thin flat plate with large deflections are solved for the special case of a plate with clamped edges having a ratio of length to width of 1.5 and loaded by uniform normal pressure. Center deflections, membrane stresses, and extreme-fiber bending stresses are given as a function of pressure for center deflections up to twice the thickness of the plate. For small deflections the results coincide with those obtained by Hencky from the linear theory" (p. 1).

Adaptor for Measuring Principal Strains With Tuckerman Strain Gage

Description: Report discussing an adapter which uses three Tuckerman optical strain gages to measure the displacement of the three vortices of an equilateral triangle along lines 120 degrees apart. These displacements are substituted in well-known equations in order to compute the magnitude and direction of the principal strains. Tests of the adaptor indicate that principal strains over a gage length of 1.42 inch may be measured with a systematic error not exceeding 4 percent and a mean observational error … more

Corrosion of Magnesium Alloy ZK60A in Marine Atmosphere and Tidewater

Description: "The corrosion resistance of unprotected magnesium-zinc-zirconium alloy ZK60A was determined in a marine atmosphere and in tidewater. The unprotected alloy was so rapidly attacked in tidewater that it would be of no practical value in applications subject to wetting by sea water. In the marine atmosphere the rate of corrosion was much less and the alloy should give good service if adequately protected" (p. 1).
