Final Report- "An Algorithmic and Software Framework for Applied Partial Differential Equations (APDEC): A DOE SciDAC Integrated Software Infrastructure Center (ISIC)

Description: All of the work conducted under the auspices of DE-FC02-01ER25473 was characterized by exceptionally close collaboration with researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). This included having one of my graduate students - Sarah Williams - spend the summer working with Dr. Ann Almgren a staff scientist in the Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) which is a part of the National Energy Research Supercomputer Center (NERSC) at LBNL. As a result of this visit … more

Identification and Characterization of Thermobifida Fusca Genes Involved in Plant Cell Wall Degradation.

Description: Micro-array experiments identified a number of Thermobifida fusca genes which were upregulated by growth on cellulose or plant biomass. Five of these genes were cloned, overexpressed in E. coli and the expressed proteins were purified and characterized. These were a xyloglucanase,a 1-3,beta glucanase, a family 18 hydrolase and twocellulose binding proteins that contained no catalytic domains. The catalyic domain of the family 74 endoxyloglucanase with a C-terminal, cellulose binding module was … more

Production of Butyric Acid and Butanol from Biomass

Description: Environmental Energy Inc has shown that BUTANOL REPLACES GASOLINE - 100 pct and has no pollution problems, and further proved it is possible to produce 2.5 gallons of butanol per bushel corn at a production cost of less than $1.00 per gallon. There are 25 pct more Btu-s available and an additional 17 pct more from hydrogen given off, from the same corn when making butanol instead of ethanol that is 42 pct more Btu-s more energy out than it takes to make - that is the plow to tire equation is po… more

Theoretical and Computational Studies of Pattern Formation

Description: This is the final report in connection with the project ''Theoretical and computational studies of pattern formation''. The objectives of this research are to improve the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the formation of complex spatio temporal patterns in systems that are driven outside of thermodynamic equilibrium, to characterize the macroscopic properties of such states, and to apply the methodology to situations of interest in fluid mechanics, materials processing and engineering. more

The Evolutionary Dynamics of Cancer: Final Report

Description: We hypothesized that a subset of the mutations observed in the progression to cancer confer beneficial selective effects on the cell. Our aim was to identify these selective mutations and to infer the interactions between the mutant clones in Barrett's esophagus (BE) that eventually lead to the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The results were to be a set of predictions about the roles of specific mutations in the progression to cancer.
