Photovoltaic engineering services pertinent to solar energy conversion

Description: The application of the compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) for use with solar cells has been investigated. Experiments with state-of-the-art Si cells in a CPC and under solar concentration were performed. A theoretical model for calculating the behavior of Si solar cells with concentration was developed. Detailed calculations of the energy distribution in the CPC were made. Finally a cost effectiveness analysis shows that the CPC system will produce power at very much lower cost than will fla… more

Metal vapor excimer laser. Quarterly progress report, May 1, 1977--July 31, 1977. [CdHg vapors]

Description: The CdHg excimer program will attempt to determine the existence of optical gain in a discharge pumped high temperature medium. This first quarterly contract period primarily involves detailed design of the experimental apparatus capable of producing high temperature metal vapor. The report begins with the general considerations which went into designing the experiment and follows with descriptions and schematics of the experiment as presently conceived.

Preliminary evaluation of two-element optical concentrators for use in solar photovoltaic systems

Description: The objective of this program was: to evaluate for photovoltaic applications the use of the compound parabolic concentrator design as a field collector--in conjunction with a primary focusing concentrator. The primary focusing concentrator may be a parabolic reflector, an array of Fresnel mirrors, a Fresnel lens, or some other type; Select several candidate configurations of such compound systems (focusing concentrators/CPC field collectors); Perform an analytic evaluation of the technical perf… more

Distinction between the roles of O/sub 2/ and of O/sup -//sub 2/ in biological radiodamage

Description: The paper attempts to elucidate the roles of oxygen and superoxide radical in biological damage due to ionizing radiation. Specifically, the effect of gamma radiation on the survival of T4 bacteriophage and of E. coli B has been investigated. (ACR)

Management of waste cladding hulls. Part II. An assessment of zirconium pyrophoricity and recommendations for handling waste hulls

Description: This report reviews experience and research related to the pyrophoricity of zirconium and zirconium alloys. The results of recent investigations of the behavior of Zircaloy and some observations of industrial handling and treatment of Zircaloy tubing and scrap are also discussed. A model for the management of waste Zircaloy cladding hulls from light water reactor fuel reprocessing is offered, based on an evaluation of the reviewed information. It is concluded that waste Zircaloy cladding hulls … more

Assessment of a small pressurized water reactor for industrial energy

Description: An evaluation of several recent ERDA/ORNL sponsored studies on the application of a small, 365 MW(t) pressurized water reactor for industrial energy is presented. Preliminary studies have investigated technical and reliability requirements; costs for nuclear and fossil based steam were compared, including consideration of economic inflation and financing methods. For base-load industrial steam production, small reactors appear economically attractive relative to coal fired boilers that use coal… more

Low temperature heat capacity of lutetium and lutetium hydrogen alloys

Description: The heat capacity of high purity electrotransport refined lutetium was measured between 1 and 20/sup 0/K. Results for theta/sub D/ were in excellent agreement with theta values determined from elastic constant measurements. The heat capacity of a series of lutetium-hydrogen solid solution alloys was determined and results showed an increase in ..gamma.. from 8.2 to about 11.3 mJ/g-atom-K/sup 2/ for hydrogen content increasing from zero to about one atomic percent. Above one percent hydrogen ..g… more

Solar heating and cooling of buildings: Phase I (non-residential). InterTechnology/Solar Corporation cost/benefit analysis report and supporting opinion survey, commercial buildings. National Solar Demonstration Program, executive summary

Description: A parametric study was performed to provide an estimate of the number of non-residential solar demonstration projects that will be required to start a commercial industry in solar equipment manufacturing, marketing, financing, and installation. An opinion survey was conducted among several experts in the field and results are shown. A techno-economic computer simulation of the solar industry was constructed. This simulation predicts the response of the marketplace to the ERDA program. The compu… more

Polariton effects in naphthalene crystals

Description: The experimental verification of the two-step nature of energy dissipation of photon energy by a crystal is the subject of this dissertation. The ..cap alpha..(O,O) Davydov component of the lowest energy singlet transition in pure strain-free napthalene single crystals is shown to exhibit an increase in absorption with increasing temperature, due to an increase in polariton damping via polariton-phonon scattering processes. Biological conversion of organic refuse to methane. Final report, July 1, 1973--November 30, 1976

Description: In order to predict accurately the cost of producing methane from urban refuse, studies were initiated on the dewatering of the fermentor residue and the disposal of the residue from the system. Results of the research are reported under the following subject headings: fermentation system; rheological properties of reactor slurry; filterability of reactor effluent; residue dewatering--vacuum filtration; settleability of solids in the reactor effluent; settleability of sludges from centrate trea… more

Measurement of pressure, fluidized bed level, and density in the Synthane Pilot Plant coal gasifier

Description: Fluid bed densities and levels are usually obtained from measurement of differential pressures between taps with a known vertical separation. Historically, this measurement has been difficult in high pressure coal gasification processes primarily due to plugging of the pressure taps and process instrument tubing. Likewise, the achievement of accurate and reliable pressure and differential pressure recordings is affected by similar circumstances. These typical problems were experienced at the SY… more

Synthesis and characterization of an N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-ethylenediaminetriacetic acid resin

Description: A chelating ion-exchange resin with N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylene-diaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA) used as the ligand chemically bonded to XAD-4 by an ester linkage, HEDTA-4, was synthesized. It is stable under normal experimental conditions with the liquid chromatograph. The structure of the resin was confirmed by an infrared spectrum, and by potentiometric titrations. The capacity of the resin was also obtained by potentiometric titration and by a nitrogen analysis. The resin was used to pack a col… more
