High-pressure mechanical properties of an Area 12, Nevada Test Site tuff

Description: The mechanical properties of tuff from instrument hole UG3, tunnel U12e.06 at the Nevada Test Site have been investigated to 1400 MPa, The shear strength increases from about 5 MHa unconfined to 12 MPa at 300 MPa mean pressure. A brittle-ductile transition was indicated at about 250 MPa. In uniaxial strain, the sample loads to the vicinity of the failure envelope and then is parallel to that envelope up to the highest stresses, 420 MPa. Hydrostatic pressure of 1400 MPa produces about 9% volume … more

LECTURE NOTES ON REACTOR CONTROLS

Description: This material is the outgrowth of the notes prepared for lectures on reactor controls given in 1953-55 at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. The course on reactor controls was for the purpose of acquainting the student with some of the elementary considerations involved in setting up a control and safety system for a nuclear reactor. Topics are discussed on kinetics, neutron energies, poisoning, analog computing, instrumentation, start-up, neutron sources, etc. (W.D.M.)

Strain seismometer data from the ALMENDRO event at NTS

Description: The ALMENDRO Event was conducted on Pahute Mesa at NTS, and was announced as an intermediate yield event (200 to 1000 kt). Strainmeter records were obtalned at three locations in Yucca Flat. One recording site was a triaxial station; the other two were two component stations. The station parameters and pertinent data relating to ALMENDRO are summarized in tabular form. (TFD)

Distribution of My Radium in Nitric Acid--Digestions of Pitchblende--Qualitative Notes on Filterability of Gangues: Progress Report

Description: Three groups of experiments were carried out to determine ihe disiribuiion of Ra in HNO/sub 3/ digesiion of rich pitchblende ores. The various experimenis were designed to determine the effect of washing on the removal of Ra from the gangue, effect of excess HNO/sub 3/ and time of digestion on the removal of Ra from the ore, and effect of the concentration of HNO/sub 3/ on the extraction of Ra. Lectures on Game Theory, Markov Chains, and Related Topics

Description: Notes on nine lectures delivered at Sandin Corporation in August 1957 are given. Part one contains the manuscript of a paper concerning a judging problem. Part two is concerned with finite Markov-chain theory amd discusses regular Markov chains, absorbing Markov chains, the classification of states, application to the Leontief input-output model, and semimartingales. Part three contains notes on game theory and covers matrix games, the effect of psychological attitudes on the outcomes of games,… more

THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF THE BEVATRON RAPID BEAM EJECTOR (BEAM-KICKER)

Description: The operation cycle of a bubble chamber includes a brief period during which charged particles entering a chamber produce optimum tracks. Following the lead of Rahm at the Brookhaven Cosmotron, a group at the Berkeley Bevatron constructed a rapid beam ejector to produce brief pulses of particles. Energy stored in a capacitor bank is transferred to an air-core magnet suarrounding the proton beam of the Bevatron. The protons are displaced from their normal orbit and strike a suitably located targ… more

Effect of point defects on mechanical properties of metals. Technical progress report

Description: The major research effort was on iron. The recovery of the electron irradiation effect was studied in pure iron and iron-carbon alloys. This investigation resulted in several new findings in addition to the confirmation of two assumptions used in the interpretation of the mechanical effects of electron irradiation on high-purity iron single crystals. The irradiation softening effect was studied in single crystals oriented for the (011) slip and polycrystalline specimens. Then, a striking orient… more

Proceedings of the Second Symposium on Advances in Fast-Pulse Techniques for Nuclear Counting, Held at the Ernest O. Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, California, February 12-13, 1959

Description: The symposium was organized to exchange and evaluate recent information, to explore the need for future study in the fractional-microsecond field of nuclear counting, and to consider photosensitive devices and pulse techniques. Generally the discussion was limited to the developments of the past two years. (W. L. H.)
