MTR Fast Neutron Flux Measurements for Cycle 146

Description: The fast neutron fluxes in selected positions of the MTR were measured for Cycle 146. The measurements were made at the beginning, throughout, and at the end of the cycle (564 Mwd). Vertical traverses for each position monitors are shown. (auth)

Experimental and Analytical Reactivity Studies of Clean Critical Stainless Steel Cores

Description: ABS>The results are presented of critical water height measurements made on close-packed lattices of Spert III, highly enriched, plate-type, stainless- steel-clad fuel elements. Experiments were conducted with cores containing no control rods and with cores containing a single, fully-inserted control rod. The "clean critical" data obtained in these experiments were used to test the validity of various aspects of a four-group, diffusion theory analysis of the full scale Spert III reactor. The re… more

A PULSED EDDY CURRENT TEST SYSTEM USING REFLECTED FIELDS

Description: An eddy current test system is described in which the test information is detected as a series of fields reflected from the metal surface and interior. Pulsed electromagnetic fields are caused to impinge upon the test specimen. These fields are restricted to a small cross sectional area over a path in space long enough to be useful for test purposes by devices called mask-apenture assemblies. This approach provides a number of advantages over conventional eddy current methods of comparable capa… more

Chemical Processing Technology Quarterly Progress Report, October-December 1961

Description: The ICPP processed Al fuel, prtncipally of the MTR-ETR type, durtng this quarter. Newly designed and installed processing equipment exhibited excellent operating performance. This included direct-air-pulsed extraction, stripping and scrub columns, and a cascade-controlled continuous evaporator in first cycle product concentration service. Aqueous zirconium fuel processing studies continued with the objective of adapting the hydrofluoric acid process to continuous dissolution-complexing to incre… more

ELECTROLYTIC DISSOLUTION OF NUCLEAR FUELS. PART III. STAINLESS STEEL (304) IN NITRATE SOLUTIONS

Description: The potential-current density relationships for 304 stainless steel dissolution in a nitrate system were studied as a function of solution composition and temperature in order to optimize the conditions for electrolytic dissolution of ihis material. In the nitrate system, the anodic dissolution of steel takes place in the transpassive region. Under some conditions, deviations from Tafel behavior are observed which depend greatly on the nitrate and hydrogen ion concentration, and on temperature.… more

Measurement of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference by the time dependence of strangeness

Description: The magnitude of the K{sup 0}{sub S} - K{sup 0}{sub L} mass difference has been measured by monitoring the time dependence of the strangeness of neutral K's produced in hydrogen and deuterium in the LRL 25 '' hydrogen bubble chamber. The particles originate as K-bar{sup 0} in K{sup -} change-exchange scatters at .85 to 1.15 Bev/c; the signature for an S = -1 reaction is the production of a hyperon. Seventy- seven events were found, obtaining {Delta}{omega} = 0.50 =- 0.15, measure… more

Basic Radiation Damage Studies. Technical Progress Report, December 15, 1967-December 15, 1968

Description: In this investigation, there was an examining of the effect of different doping impurities on the annealing of lightly doped n-type Ge following electron irradiation at liquid helium temperature. The index of damage is the pulsed field (hot carrier) conductivity, measured with the specimen at 4.2 degrees in Kelvin.

Preliminary Results of High-Temperature Bare U$sup 235$-C Critical Assembly Measurements

Description: The influence of temperature on the critical buckling or bare graphite assemblies with various carbon-to-uranium235 molar ratios has been measured. A range from l185: 1 to 2l,690: 1 was covered, for 45 to 1205'F. Preliminary results indicate that the fractional rate of change of critical buckling with core temperature varies monotonically with C/U2as ratio by a factor of five over the factor-of-eighteen range in gross C/U2as ratio. This quantity appears to approach asymptotically a value n… more

Air Lift Performance at Low Liquid Rates Using Oversized Piping and Lateral Runs

Description: The use of oversized piping in an air lift for transferring solutions at rates less than 5 liters per hour was proven feasible with certain limitations. Reliable operation was also obtained with air lifts containing a lateral run inserted between the point of air injection and the final discharge point. Discharge of the air lifts, especially at low liquid flows, was very erratic under the conditions studied. (auth)

A Modified Pyroelectric Sodium Fluoride Carrier Distillation Medthod For The Spectrographic Analysis Of Impurities In Plutonium

Description: A modification of the pyroelectric sodium fluoride carrier distillation method for analysis of impurities in plutonium metal is described. The metal is dissolved. Plutonium is precipitated and treated with nitric acid. The slurry obtained is dried and ignited. The resultant low density oxide is mixed with sodium fluoride and pressed into a pellet for arcing. Cobalt is used as the internal standard for densitometric using visual comparisons against prepared standards. The procedural modification… more
