Kingman reef

Description: This memorandum describes the search for an acceptable test site for surface detonations of nuclear devices. Concern is expressed over possible Tsunami hazards. Kingman Reef is recommended as a designated target area, and it is recommended that Palmyra Island be investigated as to availability.

Calculations of waves formed from surface cavities

Description: The wave motion resulting from cavities in the ocean surface was investigated using both the long wave, shallow water model and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The fluid flow resulting from the calculated collapse of the cavities is significantly different for the two models. The experimentally observed flow resulting from explosively formed cavities is in better agreement with the flow calculated using the incompressible Navier-Stokes model. The resulting wave motions decay rapidly… more

OTEC thermal resource report for Guam

Description: The temperature difference resource of Guam is unsurpassed among the ten sites studied under the present contract. The monthly mean surface temperatures are consistently high throughout the year, ranging from 27.7 to 29.2/sup 0/C. Consistently large ..delta..T values are available throughout the year, with small variability. An annual average ..delta..T greater than 20/sup 0/C is available at depths of slightly less than 500 meters. Potential OTEC sites off Guam would require cable lengths of l… more

Three-dimensional modeling of tsunami waves

Description: Two- and three-dimensional, time-dependent, nonlinear, incompressible, viscous flow calculations of realistic models of tsunami wave formation and run up have been performed using the Los Alamos-developed SOLA-3D code. The results of the SOLA calculations are compared with shallow-water, long-wave calculations for the same problems using the SWAN code. Tsunami wave formation by a continental slope subsidence has been examined using the two numerical models. The SOLA waves were slower than the S… more

State of the Coast Report, San Diego Region: Volume 1 -- Main Report

Description: From introduction: The major objectives of the study are to collect new data to quantify sediment sources, sinks, and transport characteristics, review historical data to quantify and interpret past shoreline changes, perform computer modelling of coastal processes, and provide public coordination and data management.

Annotated bibliography: Marine geologic hazards of the Hawaiian Islands with special focus on submarine slides and turbidity currents

Description: This annotated bibliography was compiled to highlight the submarine geology of the Hawaiian Islands and identify known and potential marine geologic hazards with special emphasis on turbidity currents, submarine slides and tsunamis. Some references are included that are not specific to Hawaii but are needed to understand the geologic processes that can affect the integrity of submarine cables and other man-made structures. Entries specific to the Hawaiian Island area are shown in bold type.

Environmental Resources of Selected Areas of Hawaii: Geological Hazards (DRAFT)

Description: This report has been prepared to make available and archive the background scientific data and related information collected on geologic hazards during the preparation of the environmental impact statement (EIS) for Phases 3 and 4 of the Hawaii Geothermal Project (HGP) as defined by the state of Hawaii in its April 1989 proposal to Congress. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) published a notice in the Federal Register on May 17, 1994 (Fed Regis. 5925638) withdrawing its Notice of Intent (Fed R… more

Damage from the impacts of small asteroids

Description: The fragmentation of a small asteroid in the atmosphere greatly increases its aerodynamic drag and rate of energy dissipation. The differential atmospheric pressure across it disperses its fragments at a velocity that increases with atmospheric density and impact velocity and decreases with asteroid density. Extending our previous work, we use a spherical atmosphere and a fitted curve to its density profile to find the damage done by an asteroid entering the atmosphere at various zenith angles.… more

Final Report (O1-ERD-051) Dynamic InSAR: Imaging Seismic Waves Remotely from Space

Description: The purpose of this LDRD project was to determine the feasibility of using InSAR (interferometric synthetic aperture radar) to image seismic waves remotely from space. If shown to be feasible, the long-term goal of this project would be to influence future SAR satellite missions and airborne SAR platforms to include a this new capability. This final report summarizes the accomplishments of the originally-planned 2-year project that was cut short to 1 year plus 2 months due to a funding priority… more

Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis for Southern California Coastal Facilities

Description: The overall objective of this study was to develop probabilistic seismic hazard estimates for the coastal and offshore area of Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange counties for use as a basis for the University of Southern California (USC) to develop physical models of tsunami for the coastal regions and by the California State Lands Commission (SLC) to develop regulatory standards for seismic loading and liquefaction evaluation of marine oil terminals. The probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSH… more

Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami: Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Operations

Description: On December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.0 undersea earthquake off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, unleashed a tsunami that affected more than 12 countries throughout south and southeast Asia and stretched as far as the northeastern African coast. Current official estimates indicate that more than 160,000 people are dead and millions of others are affected, including those injured, missing, or displaced, making this the deadliest tsunami on record. News reports suggest that the death … more
