Selection of the reference concept for the surface examination stations in the fuels and materials examination facility

Description: The prototype surface examination station for the Fuels and Materials Examination Facility (FMEF) will use closed circuit television (CCTV) for routine modes of operation along with a nuclear periscope for special examination needs. The CCTV and the nuclear periscope were evaluated against prescribed station requirements and compared in a side-by-side demonstration. A quantitative evaluation of their outputs showed that both systems were capable of meeting surface anomaly detection requirements… more

PINEX-2: pinhole-TV imaging of fuel ejection from an internally vented capsule

Description: The LASL pinhole-intensified TV system was used at the TREAT reactor to image an internally vented, fuel-ejection capsule designed and built by HEDL. Several improvements in the imaging system over PINEX-1 were incorporated. A sequence of 16-ms TV frames shows axial expansion, expulsion of fuel from the pin, and retention of clad integrity during the time of coverage.

PINEX-2 experiment: concept verification of an inherent shutdown mechanism for HCDA's. [LMFBR]

Description: PINEX-2 was a dual-objective experiment to continue development of the Pinhole Imaging (PINEX) system for monitoring fuel motion, and to further demonstrate the feasibility of internal fuel motion as a mechanism for mitigating the consequences of hypothetical LMFBR accidents. A special fuel pin with a pre-fabricated central hole in the fuel, insulator, and reflector was pre-irradiated in the General Electric Test Reactor and subjected to a simulated 5$/sec transient overpower excursion in the T… more

Developments in the LASL Fuel Pin Imaging System: PINEX-3A

Description: The LASL Fuel Pin Imaging System was evaluated using a series of 10 TREAT transients, each of approx. 240-MW peak power. HEDL provided the fuel-ejection type capsule with annular fuel pellets. The pin visibility threshold was determined to be approx. 20-MW of TREAT power (approx. 130 W/g), almost an order of magnitude improvement over our PINEX-2 threshold. The impact of changes in instrumentation, imaging apertures, and fluors that produced the improved sensitivity are reported. Results of a t… more

Comparative analysis of network television news coverage of nuclear power, coal, and solar stories

Description: The purpose of this research was to analyze national television news coverage of nuclear power, coal power, and solar power issues to help gain an understanding about the information being presented about energy technologies that has been shaping public attitudes. ABC, CBS, and NBC news broadcasts from 1972 through 1977 were analyzed. A summary of the findings is presented.

Practical, cost-effective method for real-time surveillance of widely-separated remote sites. [System based on FM CATV concept]

Description: Effective intrusion protection for uninhabited sites scattered widely throughout a large geographic area can be a difficult and expensive proposition. When the sites are important enough to require continuous surveillance, the problem is even worse. Roving patrols are not effective, and conventional alarms don't provide enough information to allow a meaningful response. Television systems have possibilities but also disadvantages: the usual system is both costly and inflexible. This paper descr… more

Design requirements and performance requirements for reactor fuel recycle manipulator systems

Description: The development of a new generation of remote handling devices for remote production work in support of reactor fuel recycle systems is discussed. These devices require greater mobility, speed and visual capability than remote handling systems used in research activities. An upgraded manipulator system proposed for a High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor fuel refabrication facility is described. Design and performance criteria for the manipulators, cranes, and TV cameras in the proposed system ar… more

Neutron diffraction tomography: a unique, 3D inspection technique for crystals using an intensifier TV system

Description: The application of phosphor-intensifier-TV techniques to neutron topography and tomography of crystals is described. The older, analogous x-ray topography using wavelengths approximately 1.5A is widely used for surface inspection. However, the crystal must actually be cut in order to see diffraction anomalies beneath the surface. Because 1.5-A thermal neutrons are highly penetrating, much larger and thicker specimens can be used. Also, since neutrons have magnetic moments, they are diffracted b… more
