An acoustically controlled tetherless underwater vehicle for installation and maintenance of neutrino detectors in the deep ocean

Description: The task of installing and servicing high energy neutrino detectors in the deep ocean from a surface support vessel is problematic using conventional tethered systems. An array of multiple detector strings rising 500 m from the ocean floor, and forming a grid with 50 m spacing between the strings, presents a substantial entanglement hazard for equipment cables deployed from the surface. Examination of a Nonregenerative Heat Exchanger From the u.s.s. Nautilus (Ssn-571)

Description: Selected components from a staianless steel nonregenerative heat exchanger removed from the U.S.S. Nautilus (SSN571) have been examined for evidence of stress-corrosion cracking. The examination was conducted on three baffle plates, all primary-face seal welds, and the tubes and the surrounding tube sheets of 7 out of a total of 35 tubes. Broadband acoustic source processing in a noisy shallow ocean environment

Description: Acoustic sources found in the ocean environment are spatially complex and broadband, complicating the analysis of received acoustic data considerably. A model-based approach is developed for a broadband source in a shallow ocean environment characterized by a normal-mode propagation model. Here we develop the optimal Bayesian solution to the broadband pressure-field enhancement and modal function extraction problem.

Model-based localization for a shallow ocean experiment

Description: In this paper a modern approach was developed to solve the passive localization problem in ocean acoustics using the state-space formulation. It is shown that the inherent structure of the resulting processor consists of a parameter estimator coupled to a nonlinear optimization scheme. Application of Polynomial and Radial Basis Function Maps to Signal Masking

Description: The objective of this research was to develop and demonstrate a technique for encrypting information by using a masking signal that closely approximates local ambient noise. Signal masking techniques developed to date have used nonlinear differential equations, spread spectrum, and various modulation schemes to encode information. Glider communications and controls for the sea sentry mission.

Description: This report describes a system level study on the use of a swarm of sea gliders to detect, confirm and kill littoral submarine threats.
