Benefits for the Aged and the Federal Budget: Short- and Long-Term Projections

Description: As the 108th Congress addresses short-term budget decisions, it may also want to consider the long-run impacts of those decisions and the major shifts in budget composition that are underway. Congress may be pressed to add new benefits in response to population aging, such as improved support for long-term care and broader Medicare drug coverage.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs): Legislative Issues in the 106th Congress

Description: Bills introduced in the 106th Congress would have raised the limit on contributions to individualretirement accounts(IRAs) and eased other federal IRA rules. The House passed H.R. 5203, incorporating the higher IRA contribution limits of H.R.1102, on September 19, 2000. The IRA provisions of the bill would have cost $21.7 billion in foregone revenue over 10 years. Trade Adjustment Assistance for Workers: Proposals for Renewal and Reform

Description: The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program offers extended unemployment benefits and job training to workers left jobless by the impact of foreign trade. A similar program was begun with the adoption of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This Transitional Adjustment Assistance Program (NAFTA-TAAP) not only aids trade-affected workers but also helps those who lose jobs because their firms have relocated production to Canada or Mexico.
