SST Sample Characterization Analysis of Archive Samples 102-C, 105-C, and 106-C

Description: A substantial effort is planned to be initiated at the Hanford Site regarding the characterization of 149 single-shell tanks (SSTs) containing the byproducts of reprocessing during the 1950s and 1960s. Sampling and analysis, in distinct phases, are planned to involve laboratory investigations to determine both chemical and radionuclide inventories, so that waste disposal decisions can be developed. During 1989, trial analyses were performed on four archived samples from SSTs at the Pacific Nort… more

Heat flow patterns of the North American continent: A discussion of the DNAG Geothermal Map of North America

Description: The large and small-scale geothermal features of the North American continent and surrounding ocean areas illustrated on the new 1:5,000,000 DNAG Geothermal Map of North America are summarized. Sources for the data included on the map are given. The types of data included are heat flow sites coded by value, contours of heat flow with a color fill, areas of major groundwater effects on regional heat flow, the top-of-geopressure in the Gulf Coast region, temperature on the Dakota aquifer in the m… more

The thermodynamic properties of 2-methylaniline and trans-(R,S)- decahydroquinoline

Description: Measurements leading to the calculation of the ideal-gas thermodynamic properties for 2-methylaniline and trans-(R,S)-decahydroquinoline are reported. Experimental methods included combustion calorimetry, adiabatic heat-capacity calorimetry, comparative ebulliometry, inclined-piston gauge manometry, and differential-scanning calorimetry (dsc). Entropies, enthalpies, and Gibbs energies of formation were derived for the ideal gas at selected temperatures for both compounds. Critical properties we… more

ASHRAE Standard 62-1989: Energy, Cost, and Program Implications.

Description: ASHRAE Standard 62-1989 (Standard 62-89) Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality'' is the new heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry consensus for ventilation air in commercial buildings. Bonneville Power Administration (Bonneville) references ASHRAE Standard 62-81 (the predecessor to Standard 62-89) in their current environmental documents for required ventilation rates. Through its use, it had become evident to Bonneville that Standard 62-81 needed interpretation. No… more

Savannah River Site (SRS) environmental overview

Description: The environmental surveillance activities at and in the vicinity of the Savannah River Site (SRS) (formerly the Savannah River Plant (SRP)) comprise one of the most comprehensive and extensive environmental monitoring programs in the United States. This overview contains monitoring data from routine and nonroutine radiological and nonradiological environmental surveillance activities, summaries of environmental protection programs in progress, a summary of National Environmental Policy Act (NEP… more

The thermodynamic properties of 2-aminobiphenyl (an intermediate in the carbazole/hydrogen reaction network)

Description: Catalytic hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) is a key step in upgrading processes for conversion of heavy petroleum, shale oil, tar sands, and the products of the liquefaction of coal to economically viable products. This research program provides accurate experimental thermochemical and thermophysical properties for key organic nitrogen-containing compounds present in the range of alternative feedstocks, and applies the experimental information to thermodynamic analyses of key HDN reaction networks. Structure-process-property relations in excimer laser surface processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Description: Excimer laser processing results in very rapid solidification of metal surfaces. In addition to mixing or segregation processes, rapid heat treatment can result in phase transformations which yield beneficial surface properties. We have investigated the effect of pulsed excimer laser radiation on the microstructure and surface hardness of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. This material undergoes a well defined martensite transformation during rapid quenching from temperatures in the {beta} phase field. The dept… more

PVUSA progress report, 1989--1990

Description: Photovoltaics for Utility Scale Applications (PVUSA) is a national public-private partnership that is assessing and demonstrating the viability of utility scale photovoltaic electric generating systems. The project has been designed to provide utilities with hands-on experience needed to evaluate and utilize PV as the technology matures. PVUSA provides manufacturers with a test bed for their products and encourages technology improvement and cost reductions in both the PV modules and other PV s… more
