The relationship between collegiate band members' preferences of teacher interpersonal behavior and perceived self-efficacy.

Description: The first purpose of this study was to describe collegiate band members' preferred teacher interpersonal behaviors and perceptions of self-efficacy based on the gender, year in college, instrument, and major. The second purpose of the study was to measure the relationship between preferences of interpersonal teacher behavior and self-efficacy scores. The non-probability purposive sample (N = 1020) was composed of band members representing 12 universities from different regions of the United Sta… more

A Record of the Development of a High School Summer Repertory Company in Plano, Texas from 1978-1981

Description: This thesis records data on the development of The Park Boulevard Players, Plano, Texas, as an innovative school district theatre arts program. Data is organized to illustrate program growth based on educational and performance needs of involved students and community citizens. It proves that high school students are capable of producing summer entertainment worthy of community viewing. Being original in form and content, this thesis should serve as a resourceful guide for similar programs. The… more

C-104 high-level waste solids: Washing/leaching and solubility versus temperature studies

Description: This report describes the results of a test conducted by Battelle to assess the effects of inhibited water washing and caustic leaching on the composition of the C-104 HLW solids. The objective of this work was to determine the composition of the C-104 solids remaining after washing with 0.01 M NaOH or leaching with 3 M NaOH. Another objective of this test was to determine the solubility of the C-104 solids as a function of temperature. The work was conducted according to test plan BNFL-TP-2995… more

Mixing of process heels, process solutions, and recycle streams: Results of the small-scale radioactive tests

Description: Various recycle streams will be combined with the low-activity waste (LAW) or the high-level waste (HLW) feed solutions during the processing of the Hanford tank wastes by BNFL, Inc. In addition, the LAW and HLW feed solutions will also be mixed with heels present in the processing equipment. This report describes the results of a test conducted by Battelle to assess the effects of mixing specific process streams. Observations were made regarding adverse reactions (mainly precipitation) and eff… more

Role of beam absorption in plasma during laser welding

Description: The relationship between beam focus position and penetration depth in CW laser welding was studied numerically and experimentally for different welding conditions. Calculations were performed using a transient hydrodynamic model that incorporates the effect of evaporation recoil pressure and the associated melt expulsion. The simulation results are compared with measurements made on a series of test welds obtained using a 1650 W CO{sub 2} laser. The simulations predict, and the experiments conf… more

Observation of high energy atmospheric neutrinos with antarctic muon and neutrino detector array

Description: The Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) began collecting data with ten strings in 1997. Results from the first year of operation are presented. Neutrinos coming through the Earth from the Northern Hemisphere are identified by secondary muons moving upward through the array. Cosmic rays in the atmosphere generate a background of downward moving muons, which are about 10{sup 6} times more abundant than the upward moving muons. Over 130 days of exposure, we observed a total of abou… more

X-ray bang-time and fusion reaction history at ~ps resolution using RadOptic detection

Description: We report recent progress in the development of RadOptic detectors, radiation to optical converters, that rely upon x-ray absorption induced modulation of the optical refractive index of a semiconductor sensor medium to amplitude modulate an optical probe beam. The sensor temporal response is determined by the dynamics of the electron-hole pair creation and subsequent relaxation in the sensor medium. Response times of a few ps have been demonstrated in a series of experiments conducted at the L… more

Effect of rogue particles on the sub-surface damage of fused silica during grinding/polishing

Description: The distribution and characteristics of surface cracks (i.e., sub-surface damage or scratching) on fused silica formed during grinding/polishing resulting from the addition of rogue particles in the base slurry has been investigated. Fused silica samples (10 cm diameter x 1 cm thick) were: (1) ground by loose abrasive grinding (alumina particles 9-30 {micro}m) on a glass lap with the addition of larger alumina particles at various concentrations with mean sizes ranging from 15-30 {micro}m, or (… more

Material removal and surface figure during pad polishing of fused silica

Description: The material removal and surface figure after ceria pad polishing of fused silica glass have been measured and analyzed as a function of kinematics, loading conditions, and polishing time. Also, the friction at the workpiece/lap interface, the slope of the workpiece relative to the lap plane, and lap viscoelastic properties have been measured and correlated to material removal. The results show that the relative velocity between the workpiece & lap (determined by the kinematics) and the pressur… more

Large-scale high-efficiency air stripper and recovery well network for removing volatile organic chlorocarbons from ground water

Description: The Savannah River Plant (SRP) produces special nuclear materials for the US Government. Since 1958, chemical wastes generated by an aluminum forming/metal finishing process used to manufacture fuel and target assemblies were discharged to a settling basin. This process waste stream contained acids, alkalis, metals, and chlorinated degreasing solvents. In 1981, these solvents, specifically trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, were discovered in monitor wells near the settling basin. A mon… more

Testing of a high current dc ESQ accelerator

Description: A high current dc electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) accelerator is being developed for negative-ion-based neutral beam heating and current drive on the next generation tokamak. Beam energy and current will eventually be in the MeV and multiampere range.l This CCVV (constant- current variable-voltage) accelerator uses a series of identical ESQ modules. We have successfully tested a prototype CCVV accelerator up to 200 keV with a 100 mA He{sub +} beam (with space charge equivalence of 140 mA of D{su… more

US geothermal database and Oregon cascade thermal studies: (Final report)

Description: This report describes two tasks of different nature. The first of these tasks was the preparation of a data base for heat flow and associated ancillary information for the United States. This data base is being used as the basis for preparation of the United States portion of a geothermal map of North America. The ''Geothermal Map of North America'' will be published as part of the Decade of North American Geology (DNAG) series of the Geological Society of America. The second of these tasks was… more

The NO to NO{sub 2} conversion by ethylene oxidation

Description: A well-stirred reactor experiment and chemical kinetic modeling effort were performed in order to study the effect of ethylene oxidation on the conversion of nitric oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO{sub 2}). Parameters examined in this study were temperature (1003--1260K) and input hydrocarbon concentration (220--3270 ppmv wet). The stirred reactor residence time was maintained at {approximately}2 milliseconds. Kinetic calculations indicated the NO to NO{sub 2} conversion proceeded through the… more

The effects of load-sensitive behavior on the operability margins of motor-operated gate valves

Description: Testing of motor-operated gate valves at various loads has produced a phenomenon we call load-sensitive behavior. This phenomenon has a significant effect on the accuracy of the methods used (and proposed) in the nuclear industry for determining that these valves can perform their design basis function. A valve subjected to tests with low flow and pressure loadings may achieve a stem thrust (at seating) analytically determined to be adequate for design basis flows and pressures, but this is no … more

Geochemistry of FBC waste-coal slurry solid mixtures. Technical report, December 1, 1992--February 28, 1993

Description: Three tasks are being conducted in this research project. All are related to understanding the chemistry and mineralogy of the co- disposal of fluidized bed combustion (FBC) wastes with coal slurry solid (CSS) from a coal preparation plant. During coal cleaning, pyrite and other heavy minerals and rock materials are rejected from the coal and discharged in an aqueous slurry to an impoundment. Soluble components and acid-base reaction products from mixtures of fluidized bed combustion (FBC) wast… more
