Correlation experiments and the nonvalidity of ordinary ideas about the physical world

Description: It is shown that the predictions of quantum theory in certain correlations experiments are incompatible with ordinary ideas about the physical world. In particular the following theorem is proved: Consider situations involving two experimenters, one working in each of two space-like separated regions. Suppose each is apparently free to choose to perform in his region one of two alternative experiments. Assume that the results that would be obtained in each of the alternative cases conform to th… more

Development of the electroacoustic dewatering (EAD) process for fine/ultrafine coal

Description: Battelle is undertaking engineering development of an advanced process for the dewatering of fine and ultrafine coals. The advanced process, called Electroacoustic Dewatering (EAD), capitalizes on the adaptation of synergistic effects of electric and acoustic fields to commercial coal dewatering systems, such as belt filter presses. The Battelle project for demonstrating the potential for commercial application of the EAD process for coal has the following objectives: to validate the expected t… more

French Government Indebtedness to the United States: A Summary of Basic Data

Description: This report tallies the costs of the aid that the United States gave to France from World War 1, World War 2, and the post-war period up until 1949 with mutually agreed-upon interest rates. The total of the unpaid debt came to $7,149,282,046 with the vast majority coming from World War 1.

Interrelationships between man, energy, and water quality: a new methodology for integrative analyses

Description: The STORET/MSP option was used to obtain county aggregated information on ambient water quality for sixty parameters during the period 1950 to 1978. Masks, extended EXTRACT specifications and bounds on allowable values limited inclusion of erroneous data. Remark codes were required to aggregate STORET parameters to obtain increased numbers of observations. Numerous statistical analyses led to the conclusions that medians were more useful than means, that trimming on number of observations was r… more

Particle Splitting for Monte-Carlo Simulation of the National Ignition Facility

Description: The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is scheduled for completion in 2009. Thereafter, experiments will commence in which capsules of DT will be imploded, generating neutrons, gammas, x-rays, and other reaction products that will interact in the facility's structure. In order to understand and minimize the exposure of workers within the facility to prompt and delayed (activation) dose, they have developed a model for the facility using the three-dime… more

Probabilistic and numerical techniques in the study of statistical theories of turbulence. Final Technical Report

Description: In this research project we made fundamental advances in a number of problems arising in statistical equilibrium theories of turbulence. Here are the highlights. In most cases the mathematical analysis was supplemented by numerical calculations. (a) Maximum entropy principles. We analyzed in a unified framework the Miller-Robert continuum model of equilibrium states in an ideal fluid and a modification of that model due to Turkington. (b) Equivalence and nonequivalence of ensembles. We gave a c… more

Quantitative characterization of the protein contents of the exocrine pancreatic acinar cell by soft x-ray microscopy and advanced digital imaging methods

Description: The study of the exocrine pancreatic acinar cell has been central to the development of models of many cellular processes, especially of protein transport and secretion. Traditional methods used to examine this system have provided a wealth of qualitative information from which mechanistic models have been inferred. However they have lacked the ability to make quantitative measurements, particularly of the distribution of protein in the cell, information critical for grounding of models in term… more

SUNDIALSTB, a MATLAB Interface to SUNDIALS

Description: SUNDIALS [2], SUite of Nonlinear and DIfferential/ALgebraic equation Solvers, is a family of software tools for integration of ODE and DAE initial value problems and for the solution of nonlinear systems of equations. It consists of CVODE, IDA, and KINSOL, and variants of these with sensitivity analysis capabilities. SUNDIALSTB is a collection of MATLAB functions which provide interfaces to the SUNDIALS solvers. The core of each MATLAB interface in SUNDIALSTB is a single MEX file which interfac… more
