The Incidence of Escherichia Coli and other Coliform Organisms on Seventy-One Samples of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Purchased from Eight Grocery Stores in Denton, Texas

Description: This investigation has for its aim the explanation of the incidence of colon bacteria on a number of food samples purchased in grocery stores of Denton, Texas, by an analysis of correlative sanitary factors.

Determination of the Optimum Concentration of Sulfur Dioxide to be Used in Sweet Potato Dehydration

Description: The object of this paper is to determine the optimum concentration of sulfur dioxide to be used in the commercial dehydration of the sweet potato by this process. Attention has been given to two aspects of the problem, (1) the effect of sulfur dioxide upon the extraction of water from the sweet potato by mechanical means, and (2) the effect of sulfur dioxide upon the stability of the carotene in the sweet potato over a period of several months.

The Synthesis and Testing of Differential Herbicides

Description: This investigation was limited to the preparation of substituted phenoxyacetic acids and related compounds. The types of substances prepared for testing can, in general, be placed in three groups. These are: aryloxyacetic acids, arylmercaptoacetic acids, and those acids containing the thiophene nucleus.

Hydantoin Derivatives as Anticonvulsants. I. 5-Cyclohexylalkyl-5-(2-Thienyl)Hydantoins

Description: The study herein described represents a continuation of the work on 5-(2-thienyl)-5-substituted hydantoins which has been in progress in the laboratories of the North Texas State College for the past several years. It has for its purpose the study of the effect of lengthening the carbon chain connecting a cyclohexyl radical to 5-(2-thienyl)hydantoin in the 5- position.

An Application of the Reformatsky Reaction to the Thiophene Series of Compounds

Description: In view of the increasing importance of thiophene derivatives as chemotherapeutic agents, it was considered of interest to apply the Reformatsky reaction to the synthesis of compounds containing the thiophene nucleus with the thought that these might serve as intermediates for further syntheses.

Hydantoins as Anticonvulsants. III. 5-Alkoxy- and Aryloxymethyl-5-(2-Thienyl) Hydantoins

Description: It has been shown in the case of a compound synthesized in this laboratory that substitution of the thienyl group for one of the phenyl groups in diphenyl hydantoin produces a compound with less toxicity and somewhat greater activity. It was considered of interest to carry out an analogous substitution in the series of 5-phenyl-5-alkoxymethylhydantions.

A Microbial Survey of Raw Ingredients Used in Finished Products at Kraft Foods Company, Garland, Texas

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine through routine checks the number of organisms present in the various raw ingredients used for the preparation of foods. The problem has consisted of, first, a determination of the total bacterial population by numbers; second, a determination of the incidence of colon bacteria in the samples examined; third, a determination of the presence of yeasts and molds; and fourth, an attempt to utilize this information obtained in judging the methods of… more

The Antibiotic Effect of Pigmented Actinomycetes

Description: This thesis attempts, first, to correlate pigmentation of actinomycetes with the degree of antibiocity; second, to establish the most favorable means of producing a rich luxuriant pigmentation in the individual organism studied by enriching favorable media with specific types of proteins and amino acids.

Infrared Studies of Anions of Barbituric Acids

Description: As long ago as 1881, it was realized that a functional group of atoms in a molecule would cause an absorption band to appear at a particular frequency in the infrared spectrum of the molecule. In more recent years, the concept of characteristic group frequencies has become firmly established and has resulted in the present widespread use of infrared spectroscopy. There appear to have been relatively few studies of infrared absorption of organic acids as compared with their salts.

Synthesis of some 1-Substituted-2-Methylnaphthimidazole-4,9-Diones

Description: Imidazole derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinones are found to have biological activity which interferes with the utilization of vitamin K or of the purines since they have groups common to these two classes of compounds. This thesis shows the preparation of some 1-substituted-naphthimidazole-4,9-diones for possible biological activity.
