Radiological effects of SRS operations, 1988

Description: A discussion of the offsite effective dose equivalents reported for 1988 SRS releases serves as the basis for this report. Detailed analyses of atmospheric and liquid release trends and their consequences in terms of relative importance among facilities, radionuclides, and exposure pathways have also been included. Releases of radioactivity to the atmosphere were generally lower in 1988 than in 1987. No major unplanned tritium releases were recorded during the year. However, there were three in… more

Use of a Fish Transportation Barge for Increasing Returns of Steelhead Imprinted for Homing, 1986 Annual Report.

Description: In 1982, the National Marine Fisheries Service began a 6-year study to determine if transporting steelhead, Salmo gairdneri, smolts by barge from Dworshak National Fish Hatchery (NFH) to a release site on the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam would result in increased returns of adults to the various fisheries and to the hatchery homing site. During 1982 and 1983, over 500,000 juveniles were marked and serially released as controls from the hatchery or barged as test fish to below Bonneville … more

Unsteady flow model of Priest Rapids Dam releases at Hanford Reach, Columbia River, Washington

Description: A model was developed to simulate water levels at three locations on the Columbia River between Priest Rapids Dam River Mile 396.1 (River Kilometer 639.0) and River Mile 361.50 (River Kilometer 581.7). The model was calibrated and verified over a range of flows. The results of calibration and verification indicate that the model, with reasonable accuracy, simulates stages to within +-0.08 m (+- 0.25 ft) and surface wave timing to within +-20 min. The model can be used by researchers, river syst… more

BIODOSE: a code for predicting the dose to man from radionuclides released from underground nuclear waste repositories

Description: The BIODOSE computer program simulates the environmental transport of radionuclides released to surface water and predicts the resulting dosage to humans. This report describes the program and discusses its use in the evaluation of nuclear waste repositories. The methods used to estimate dose are examined critically, and the most important parameters in each stage of the calculations are identified as an aid in planning for measurements in the field. Dose predictions from releases of nuclear wa… more
