Radiochemical analyses of soil and vegetation samples taken from the Hanford environs, 1971--1976

Description: Soil and vegetation have routinely been collected on the Hanford Site and surrounding environs as one method of monitoring radionuclide concentrations potentially attributable to Hanford operations. With the exception of a few locations, the data indicate that Hanford operations have made no significant contribution to existing radionuclide concentrations in soil and vegetation. Most of the activity seen in the samples can be attributed to natural causes or worldwide atmospheric fallout. The fe… more

Fusion reactor wastes

Description: The potential waste releases for commercial fusion power plants were estimated by use of standard environmental analysis procedures incorporating a high degree of speculation. The analytical procedure is presented. A description was obtained for each of the ten fusion power plant concepts currently being developed. These concepts were then analyzed to determine the general characteristics and probable waste releases. (MOW)

Surface chemistry of selected lunar regions. [Th, K, Fe, Mg, and Ti]

Description: A completely new analysis has been carried out on the data from the Apollo 15 and 16 ..gamma.. ray spectrometer experiments. The components of the continuum background have been estimated. The elements Th, K, Fe and Mg give useful results; results for Ti are significant only for a few high Ti regions. Errors are given, and the results are checked by other methods. Concentrations are reported for about sixty lunar regions; the ground track has been subdivided in various ways. The borders of the … more

Power plant siting; an application of the nominal group process technique

Description: The application of interactive group processes to the problem of facility siting is examined by this report. Much of the discussion is abstracted from experience gained in applying the Nominal Group Process Technique, an interactive group technique, to the identification and rating of factors important in siting nuclear power plants. Through this experience, interactive group process techniques are shown to facilitate the incorporation of the many diverse factors which play a role in siting. In… more

Radiochemical studies for the nuclear chemical mining of copper. [Nuclear explosive fracturing]

Description: Experiments were performed to study the long-term reactions of radioactive materials that would be produced in the nuclear chemical mining of chalcopyrite copper ore. These reactions were carried out in autoclaves for up to eight months at 2.76 MPa of oxygen and 363 K. Dissolving rates of radioactive glass in copper-leaching product solutions were determined by the gamma-counting of solution aliquots. The glass decomposition rate was linear at approximately 1 x 10/sup -10/ kg/s.m/sup 2/. A radi… more

BNL Laboratory hoods: rationalization for exemption from monitoring and reporting requirements

Description: During an ERDA safety and health inspection, Brookhaven National Laboratory was cited for failure to monitor and report the amount of airborne contaminants released to the environment via laboratory hoods. However, an analysis of potential environment releases of radiological and nonradiological contaminants from these hoods illustrate that even under worst case situations, emissions of these contaminants would not endanger the community air quality. Brookhaven is therefore requesting an exempt… more

Observations of the distribution and the nature of alpha-active particulate material in a HEPA filter used for plutonium-containing dust

Description: Autoradiography has been used to determine the distribution and the nature of plutonium particulate material on a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter used to filter /sup 239/Pu-containing dust. Higher concentrations of alpha-active material on upstream and downstream folds of the filter indicate uneven airflow through the filter. Observations of aggregate recoil particles on the downstream face of the filter suggest that aggregate recoil transfer, a mechanism which may reduce long-ter… more

Sequim Marine Research Laboratory routine environmental measurements during CY-1976

Description: Beginning in 1976, a routine environmental program was established at the Marine Research Laboratory (MRL) at Sequim, Washington. The program is designed, primarily, to determine levels of radioactivity present in selected biota in Sequim Bay. The biota were selected because of their presence near the laboratory and their capacity to concentrate trace elements. Other samples were obtained to determine the radionuclides in Sequim Bay and laboratory drinking water, as well as the ambient radiatio… more
