Simulation of chlorinated water discharges from power plants on estuaries and rivers

Description: The fast-transient (tidal-transient) one-dimensional discrete-element chemical transport model and its associated computer code CHMONE were applied to study the effects of chlorinated water discharges from power plants on tidal estuaries and controlled rivers. The mathematical model has the capability to predict simultaneously the hydrodynamic, thermal, and chemical composition of water as one-dimensional time-dependent distributions. (LTW)

Study of the health effects of bicycling in an urban atmosphere. Final report

Description: This report analyzes data on the health effects of bicycling in an urban environment through intensive study of ten healthy male subjects bicycling or driving in systematically varied conditions in the streets of Washington, D.C. Evaluation criteria for available technology and instrumentation are included and a methodology is developed for route selection. Specific air pollutants (carbon monoxide, ozone, sulfates, nitrates, and particulates) are measured concurrently with exposure and subseque… more

Outdoor sources of indoor air pollution

Description: Conservation measures that seal a building, like storm window installation, can significantly reduce its energy requirements. These measures also protect its occupants from air pollutants having outdoor sources but amplify any harmful effects of those generated indoors. Using these Fourier series techniques and an approximation of outdoor pollution peaks by step functions, we obtained the following results: the average daily concentration indoors is the same as outdoors for any pollutant with n… more

Relation of air pollution to mortality: a critique. [SO/sub 2/ in New York City air]

Description: A study of the relation between SO/sub 2/ and smoke-shade in the surface air of New York City and deaths resulting from respiratory and heart diseases is discussed. The need to use data from a number of sampling stations in any epidemiological study on the health effects of air pollutants is stressed. It is pointed out that the complicated effects of weather on the environmental transport of air pollutants and the variations in statistical methods used may lead to eronious conclusions as to the… more

Development of vertical dispersion coefficients for deep-valley terrain. [Aerosol particle transport model]

Description: Results are reported from studies conducted to determine reliable dispersion coefficients for use with the Gaussian plume model, that will represent a broader range of topographic conditions than was intended for the standard Pasquill-Gifford values. Total-vertical-dispersion coefficients for deep-valley terrain were developed from direct measurements of vertical dispersion made by the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment (NDRE) between 1965 and 1968, in three deep valleys, and one fjord lo… more

Trace elements in the terrestrial environment of a coal-fired powerhouse

Description: A coal-fired powerhouse at the Savannah River Plant, Aiken, South Carolina operated for more than 20 years without electrostatic precipitators and consumed about 360,000,000 kilograms of coal per year. Twenty-nine trace elements were measured in fly ash, and in samples of soil, vegetation, and ground water collected along a 29-km traverse centered on the powerhouse. There were statistically significant effects of the stack releases upon the concentration of Ba, Be, Cu, Hg, Mn, Se, and Sr in soi… more

Coal technology program. Progress report, October 1977

Description: Two blocks of Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal were pyrolyzed under reducing gas in the project in support of in situ gasification. Higher heating rates appear to reduce swelling of the block during pyrolysis, and higher final pyrolysis temperature results in lower boiling tars. Three pressurized residue carbonization tests were completed at 1100/sup 0/F and 400 psi of methane with three feed materials. Work is in progress on the fracture toughness of thick sections of steels for piping and pres… more

Description: Progress is reported on a study of statistical methods for the correlation of environmental factors and health effects, with emphasis on the effects of air pollution. Statistical methods and models for describing the effects of the environment, measured in terms of pollution and weather variables on health, so far measured only in terms of respiratory diseases, are discussed. Plans for conducting a six-city pollution health study are also discussed. A list of publications during 1976 and 1977 i… more

Use of a semiconductor laser in infrared spectroscopy

Description: A semiconductor laser has certain properties which makes its use desirable as a continuous monitor of atmospheric pollutants. Its energy output is concentrated in widely separated energy modes of very narrow bandwidths (less than 10/sup -5/ cm/sup -1/) which can be centered on one infrared absorption line of one gas. This makes the laser quite selective. The energy in each mode is typically greater than 200 ..mu.. watts, and, because of the laser's small size, its light energy can be colli… more

Trends in atmospheric particulate concentrations at a location in the northeast United States. [Rural area near New York City]

Description: Real-time measurements of total particulate concentrations have been made continuously during the past two years to provide aerometric background information for correlation with meteorological parameters. The measurements were made to determine short and long time variations, frequency distributions, episodical information, effects on solar radiation and spectral analysis to show important time histories in a rural area near the New York City metropolitan region. This study provides useful bac… more

Visibility issue in the Rocky Mountain West. [Relation to energy facility siting]

Description: Clear, clean air is one of the natural resources of the Rocky Mountain West. The visibility provisions of the Clean Air Act of 1977 were intended to protect this natural resource in certain Federal class I areas, for example, national parks and wilderness areas. There are a number of potential issues which arise due to the possible reduction of visibility caused by emissions from energy facilities. A number of these issues are briefly discussed. The issues are highlighted by computer generated … more

Distribution and abundance of submerged aquatic macrophytes in a reactor cooling reservoir

Description: Measurements of ash-free dry weight were used to characterize the effects of a heated effluent on submerged macrophytes in a reactor cooling reservoir. The species which were most abundant during the summers of 1974 and 1975 were Myriophyllum spicatum L. and Eleocharis acicularis (L.) R. and S. Examination of the vertical distribution of the shoot biomass of Myriophyllum revealed that plants in heated areas grew closer to the water surface than plants in unheated areas. The biomass of the secon… more

Evaluation of regional effects of effluents from uranium production in New Mexico

Description: The Grants Uranium Region is a 2500 mile area of northcentral New Mexico which has produced about 40 percent of all domestic uranium, and holds over one-half of the current reserves. The increasing demand for uranium to fuel commercial nuclear power plants is resulting in rapid growth of the uranium industry and economic, social, and environmental changes are occurring. One of the environmental issues of this region is the concern for eventually unacceptable levels of air and water pollution fr… more

Some long-range speculations about coal. [CO/sub 2/ problems of greatly expanded use]

Description: Should the world demand for energy increase sixfold within the next 50 years, largely because the underdeveloped countries industrialize, and if half this demand is met by coal, then the estimated world recoverable resource of coal of 4 x 10/sup 12/ metric tons would last at this asymptotic level about 140 years. The carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is then estimated to increase about threefold. These two eventualities may place limits on our ultimate use of coal. The risk of a CO… more

Investigation of the effects of halogenated organic compounds produced in cooling systems and process effluents on aquatic organisms

Description: Both public health and environmental concern have been generated by the identification of an assemblage of halogenated organic compounds produced in the chlorination of drinking water, sewage, and power plant cooling waters. Our objectives were to determine which compounds contributed significantly to the toxicity of such chloro-organic mixtures and whether significant interaction occurred. Toxicity studies were conducted using the embryo of the carp (Cyprinus carpio) and the cladoceran Daphnia… more

Simulated atmospheric disperison of radioactive material released in an urban area

Description: A combination of Gaussian plume and particle-in-cell techniques is used to simulate the atmospheric transport and dispersion of a puff release of radioactive material. The release is caused by an accident that is assumed to occur during the shipment of the radioactive material through central New York City. The simulation provides estimates of volumetric and surface concentrations of the dispersed material that are used to predict radiation doses incurred by the City's population in the event o… more
