Preliminary analysis of core capsule x-ray spectroscopy and image results for medium-to-high growth factor implosions

Description: Recent capsule implosions using indirect drive on NOVA have probed core and near-core capsule T{sub e}, {rho} and mix structure using non-trivial pulse shapes (i.e. with a foot). These experiments have been performed using smooth as well as artificially roughened capsules. They have been performed using basically 3 non-trivial pulse-shapes with 3 different types of capsules with correspondingly different growth regimes for Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. These experiments have employed time-depe… more

High power laser and materials investigation. Final report, 31 July 1978-28 October 1979

Description: This is a combined study of resonant pumped solid state lasers as fusion drivers, and the development of crystalline optical materials suitable for propagation of the high peak powers associated with laser fusion research. During this period of study the concept of rare gas halide lasers was first demonstrated by the lasing of Tm:YLF at 453 nm pumped by the 353 nm energy of XeF. Excited stata densities of 5 x 10/sup 18/ cm/sup -3/ have been attained and spectroscopic measurements show that up t… more

Oxygen and hydrogen evolution reaction on oriented single crystals of ruthenium dioxide

Description: A novel design for water electrolysis using a solid polymer electrolyte is being developed by General Electric. Ruthenium is one of the best electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction. There are problems connected with the significant loss in electrocatalytic activity with time. This performance degradation is presumably due to the gradual formation of an RuO/sub 2/ film. We have performed electrochemical measurements on (100), (110) and (111) oriented single crystals of RuO/sub 2/ in o… more

Aspects of nuclear waste management. Volume 2: post-emplacement hazards

Description: Studies of technical issues relating to nuclear waste management are described. It supplements previous TASC reports on this topic. Volume 1 addresses events occurring before emplacement of the waste in a repository. The subjects addressed are thermal analysis of interim storage accidents and doses to the worst-situated individual in all types of pre-emplacement accidents. Volume 2 deals with the possible release of waste from a geologic repository. Aspects of long-term repository performance w… more

Development of a non-LTE spectral post-processor for dense plasma simulations with application to spectroscopic diagnostics in spherical implosions at Nova

Description: A new non-LTE spectroscopy post-processing package is described. The package processes dump files from 1 or 2-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics code simulations. Given the grid motion, temperatures, and ion densities contained in the dump files, as well as data from an arbitrarily detailed atomic model, the post-processor calculates internally consistent detailed frequency dependent opacities and radiation fields. The radiation transport equation is solved in the S{sub n} approximation using … more

Theoretical prediction of the plasma frequency and Moss-Burstein shifts for degenerately doped In{sub x}Ga{sub 1{minus}x}As

Description: Theoretical predictions for the plasma frequency and Moss-Burstein shift (optical band gap) of degenerately doped (n > 10{sup 19} cm{sup {minus}3}) In{sub x}Ga{sub 1{minus}x} As are presented. This system is of interest because it possesses desirable optical properties for thermophotovoltaic (TPV) applications. The studies presented are based on electronic band structures calculated using the Full Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FLAPW) method which includes non-local screened exchang… more

Spectral ellipsometry of GaSb and GaInAsSb: Experiment and modeling

Description: The optical constants {epsilon}(E)[={epsilon}{sub 1}(E)+i{epsilon}{sub 2}(E)] of single-crystal GaSb at 300K have been measured using spectral ellipsometry in the range of 0.3-5.3 eV. The {epsilon}(E) spectra displayed distinct structures associated with critical points (CPs) at E{sub 0} (direct gap), spin-orbit split E{sub 0}+{Delta}{sub 0} component, spin-orbit split (E{sub 1}, E{sub 1}+{Delta}{sub 1}) and (E{sub 0}{prime}, E{sub 0}{prime}+{Delta}{sub 0}{prime}) doublets, as well as E{sub 2}.… more

Atomic structure modifications of diamond-like nanocomposite films: Observation by Raman spectroscopy, FTIR and STM

Description: Raman spectroscopy, FTIR and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were used to study diamond-like nanocomposite (DLN) and metal containing DLN (Me-DLN) films. The FTIR spectra showed no appreciable absorption from the C-H stretch vibration band in DLN when 1 kV rf bias voltage was applied. Thermal annealing (450{degrees}C for 2 hrs) of (a) DLN and Cr-DLN films caused no change in the Raman spectra while (b) for Pt-DLN films there was a blue shift of both the crystalline (G) and microcrystalline … more

Diamond-like atomic-scale composite films: Surface properties and stability studied by STM and AFM

Description: Amorphous ``diamond-like/quartz-like`` composites a-(C:H/Si:O) and metal containing a-(C:H/Si:O/Me) constitute a novel class of diamond-related materials with a number of unique bulk and surface properties. In order to gain a more fundamental understanding of the surface properties and stability of these solids we have performed a scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy investigation of both a-(C:H/Si:O) and a-(C:H/Si:O/Me) films, including the effects of ion bombardment and annealing.

Analysis of some nuclear waste management options. Volume II. Appendices

Description: This report describes risk analyses performed on that portion of a nuclear fuel cycle which begins following solidification of high-level waste. Risks associated with handling, interim storage and transportation of the waste are assessed, as well as the long term implications of disposal in deep mined cavities. The risk is expressed in terms of expected dose to the general population and peak dose to individuals in the population. This volume consists of appendices which provide technical detai… more
