Evapotranspiration studies for protective barriers: FY 1990 status report

Description: Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL) and Westinghouse Hanford Company (Westinghouse Hanford) are working together to develop for the US Department of Energy (DOE) protective barriers for the near-surface disposal of hazardous waste at the Hanford Site. Degradation of cellulosic biomass and its subsequent utilization for the production of chemical feedstocks

Description: Progress in studies on the production of reducing sugars and other products by Clostridium thermocellum on cellulosic biomass is reported. The rate of reducing sugar production using corn residue was found to be equal if not greater than on solka floc. Biological processes for environmental control of effluent streams in the nuclear fuel cycle. [Denitrification; removal of heavy metals]

Description: Nitrates and radioactive heavy metals need to be removed from aqueous effluent streams in the fuel cycle. Biological methods are being developed for reducing nitrate or nitrite to N/sub 2/ gas and for decreasing dissolved metal concentration to less than 1 g/m/sup 3/. Fluidized-bed denitrification bioreactors are being tested. Removal of uranium from solution by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was studied. (DLC)

Electron microscopy of hydrocarbon production in parthenium argentatum (guayule)

Description: The electron microscope was used to study the biological processes involved in hydrocarbon production. The little desert shrub Guayule (Parthenium argentatum) was selected for study. This shrub can produce hydrocarbons (rubber) in concentrations up to 1/4 of its dry weight. It grows on semi-arid land and has been extensively studied. Characterization of a defective interfering RNA that contains a mosaic of a plant viral genome

Description: Our lab was the first to describe and characterize a defective interfering RNA (DI RNAs or DIs) in association with a small RNA plant virus. Description: The current program to convert biomass into liquid hydrocarbon fuels is an extension of the previous program to ferment marine algae to acetic acid. Moisture content analysis of covered uranium mill tailings

Microfossils from Cerro Prieto geothermal wells, Baja California, Mexico

Description: To aid in a paleoenvironmental and age reconstruction of the Cerro Prieto reservoir system, 59 samples of well cuttings were analyzed for microfossils. The cuttings were obtained at depths from 351 to 3495 m in 14 geothermal wells in the Cerro Prieto field, Baja California, Mexico. We found foraminifera in 6 samples, ostracodes in 19 samples, and nannoplankton as coccoliths in 24 samples. Benthic plant communities in acidic Lake Colden, New York: Sphagnum and the algal mat

Description: Lake Colden, in the central Adirondack Mountains of New York State is botanically similar to acidified lakes in Sweden. Acidification of some Swedish lakes has been associated with an expansion of Sphagnum, primarily in shallow, sheltered littoral areas but also to depths of 18m. Biological conversion of biomass to methane. Quarterly progress report

Description: Progress in comparative studies of complete-mix and multi-stage reactors for use in the anaerobic fermentation of organic solids for methane production is reported. Results indicate that if a balanced population of organisms can be maintained in the initial stage, multi-stage fermentation is more efficient than a complete-mix system. Gene conversion in yeast as a function of linear energy transfer (LET) for low-LET radiation

Description: The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for low-LET radiation is known to depend on such factors as LET and dose rate. Microdosimetric calculations indicate that the biological target size could also be an important parameter, and calculations predict that the RBE for effects produced by hits in target sizes below about 100 nm should be unity for all low LET radiation. Investigation on the utilization of coal fly ash as amendment to compost for vegetation in acid soil

Description: Application of fly ash-amended composts as manure enhances the crop yield of certain plants like corn, sorghum, collard and mustard greens. Organic compost made out of grass and leaves (home-made) is better than the commercial composts for amendment with fly ash. A 20--40% fly ash in the amended compost and a soil to ash-amended compost ratio of 3:1 are recommended for making bed for plantation.
