The Electrodynamometric Balance of the Small Wind Tunnel of the French Service of Aeronautical Research

Description: This investigation shows the attempt to improve the electrodynamomoter designed by Mr. Villey. The force to be measured acts on a flexible steel plate which is placed in front of a fixed plate. The deformation varies the original thickness of the layer of air between the two plates, thus causing a more rapid variation in the coefficient of electrostatic attraction of the two plates than in the capacity of the condenser formed by the dynamometer.

The Prevention of the Ice Hazard on Airplanes

Description: A review of various methods to prevent ice formation and adhesion to aircraft surfaces is given. It was concluded that the adhesion of ice to a surface may be reduced somewhat by the application of certain waxes and varnishes. In the experiments described, the varnishes containing calcium stearate and calcium oleate gave the best results. In wind tunnel tests, the adhesion was further reduced by the application of these waxes and varnishes to a thin, heat insulating layer of rubber.

Coefficients of discharge of fuel-injection nozzles for compression-ignition engines

Description: "This report presents the results of an investigation to determine the coefficients of discharge of nozzles with small, round orifices of the size used with high-speed compression-ignition engines. The injection pressures and chamber back pressures employed were comparable to those existing in compression-ignition engines during injection. The construction of the nozzles was varied to determine the effect of the nozzle design on the coefficient. Tests were also made with nozzles assembled in an… more

Practical Tests With The "Auto Control Slot" Part 2: Discussion

Description: "For some time the D.V.L. has been investigating the question of applicability of Handley Page slotted wings to German airplanes. Comparitive gliding tests were made with open and closed slots on an Albatros L 75 airplane equipped with the Handley Page "auto control slots." This investigation served to determine the effect of the auto control slot on the properties and performances of airplanes at large angles of attack. The most important problems were whether the angle of glide at small angle… more

The Magnus Effect in Theory and in Reality

Description: A discussion of the Flettner rotor is presented from a nautical and economic viewpoint, and although it was a failure, the experimental and theoretical inventions cannot be disregarded. The following critical and experimental investigation will show the relations and applicability of the theories and practical applications. The Magnus effect is described in detail and a discussion and critical review of the Magnus effect is included.

The Gaseous Explosive Reaction: The Effect of Pressure on the Rate of Propagation of the Reaction Zone and Upon the Rate of Molecular Transformation

Description: This study of gaseous explosive reaction has brought out a number of important fundamental characteristics of the explosive reaction indicating that the basal processes of the transformation are much simpler and corresponds more closely to the general laws and principles of ordinary transformations than is usually supposed. The report calls attention to the point that the rate of molecular transformation within the zone was found in all cases to be proportional to pressure, that the transformat… more

Lithologic Studies of Fine-Grained Upper Cretaceous Sedimentary Rocks of the Black Hills Region

Description: More than nine-tenths of the Upper Cretaceous rocks in northeastern Wyoming are fine-grained shales, mudstones, and calcareous marls. A comparative study of the mineralogy, chemical and mechanical composition, density and porosity, fissility, and lamination of samples of these rocks discloses several relations that throw light on the geologic history and structural deformation of the region, and perhaps on its oil and gas possibilities.
