Quantitative Treatment of the Creep of Metals by Dislocation and Rate-Process Theories

Description: "An equation for the steady-state rate of creep has been derived by applying the theory of dislocations to the creep of pure metals. The form of this equation is in agreement with empirical equations describing creep rates. The theory was also used to predict the dependence of steady-state rate of creep on physical constants of the material and good agreement was obtained with data in the literature for pure annealed metals" (p. 169).

Investigation of downwash and wake characteristics at a Mach number of 1.53 1: rectangular wing

Description: The results of an experimental investigation of the downwash and wake characteristics behind a rectangular plan-form wing of aspect ratio 3.5 are presented. The airfoil section was a 5-percent-thick, symmetrical double wedge. The tests were made at a Mach number of 1.53 and a Reynolds number of 1.25 million. A comparison between experimental and theoretical values of the downwash angles is made.

A visual photographic study of cylinder lubrication

Description: From Summary: "A V-type engine provided with a glass cylinder was used to study visually the lubrication characteristics of an aircraft-type piston. Photographs and data were obtained with the engine motored at engine speeds up to 1000 r.p.m. and constant cylinder-head pressures of 0 and 50 pounds per square inch. A study was made of the orientation of the piston under various operating conditions, which indicated that the piston was inclined with the crown nearest the major-thrust cylinder fac… more

Reduction of profile drag at supersonic velocities by the use of airfoil sections having a blunt trailing edge

Description: Report presenting a preliminary theoretical and experimental investigation of the supersonic characteristics of blunt-trailing-edge airfoils. Results regarding the drag measurements at zero lift, measurements at angle of attack, and a general discussion of the theoretical and experimental results is provided.

Generalization of Boundary-Layer Momentum-Integral Equations to Three-Dimensional Flows Including Those of Rotating System

Description: "The Navier-Stokes equations of motion and the equation of continuity are transformed so as to apply to an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system rotating with a uniform angular velocity about an arbitrary axis in space. A usual simplification of these equations as consistent with the accepted boundary-layer theory and an integration of these equations through the boundary layer result in boundary-layer momentum-integral equations for three-dimensional flows that are applicable to either rota… more

NACA Conference on Aerodynamics of High Speed Aircraft

Description: "This document contains reproductions of technical papers presented by staff members of the NACA Laboratories at the NACA Conference on Aerodynamics of High-Speed Aircraft held at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory November 1, 2, and 3, 1955. The primary purpose of the conference was to convey to contractors of the military services and others concerned with the design of aircraft the results of recent research and to provide those attending with an opportunity to discuss these results. The pa… more

Adaptation of Combustion Principles to Aircraft Propulsion, Volume 1, Basic Considerations in the Combustion of Hydrocarbon Fuels with Air

Description: The report summarizes source material on combustion for flight-propulsion engineers. First, several chapters review fundamental processes such as fuel-air mixture preparation, gas flow and mixing, flammability and ignition, flame propagation in both homogenous and heterogenous media, flame stabilization, combustion oscillations, and smoke and carbon formation. The practical significance and the relation of these processes to theory are presented. A second series of chapters describes the observ… more

Aerodynamic design of axial-flow compressors: Volume 3

Description: Chapters XI to XIII concern the unsteady compressor operation arising when compressor blade elements stall. The fields of compressor stall and surge are reviewed in Chapters XI and XII, respectively. The part-speed operating problem in high-pressure-ratio multistage axial-flow compressors is analyzed in Chapter XIII. Chapter XIV summarizes design methods and theories that extend beyond the simplified two-dimensional approach used previously in the report. Chapter XV extends this three-dimension… more
