Physics Division Summary Report for April Through June 1957

Description: A laminated scintillator was constructed of Ag activated ZnS in fused B/ sub 2/O/sub 3/. The efficiency of this scintillator was determined and compared with other scintillators. J-values of O for the 41.5 and 44.5 ev and 1 for the 52.6 ev resonances in Pu/sup 239/ were determined. New cross section values are reported for U/sup 235/. Additional attempts to establish fission product mass distribution as a function of neutron energy are reported. A method of analyzing neutron resonances by using… more

Radiological Physics Division Semiannual Report for January Through June 1957

Description: ABS>Progress is reported in the following studies: the autoradiographic mapping of the deposition of Ca/sup 45/ in cortical bone in dogs; measurement of fission-product activity present in soil; factors affecting the performance of ionization chambers; calibration tests on the dibutyl phosphate method of isolating Th/sup 228/ from solutions of ashed bone; microradiographic demonstration of changes in mineral density in dog bones; radiometric determination of radon in bone and in the atmosphere;… more

Spallation-Fission Competition in Heaviest Elements; HeliumIon-Induced Reactions in Uranium Isotopes

Description: A radiochemical study of fission and spallation products produced by bombardment of U{sup 233}, U{sup 235}, and U{sup 238} with 18-46 Mev helium ions has been made. As in the case of similar studies using isotopes of plutonium as targets, most of the reaction cross section is taken up by fission. Also, the pronounced increase of the total cross section for ({alpha},xn) reactions with increasing mass number of the target that was observed for plutonium targets is observed for uranium targets.

Reactor Safety Bibliography. Selected Unclassified References

Description: This is a revision of the Reactor Safety Bibliography prepared for the Reactor Safety Conference held at New York City on Oct. 31, 1957. It is not an exhaustive review of the published material on reactor safety but includes 223 selections from reports and published literature as a guide to some of the more recent and relevant material. Spallation-Fission Competition in Heaviest Elements; TritonProduction

Description: Stacked f o i l s of Au{sup 197}, Th{sup 232}, and U{sup 238} were bombarded, i n a series of experiments, with 48-Mev helium ions, 24-Mev deuterons, and 32-Mev protons. Tritium from each f o i l was collected and then measured by a gas-counting technique. The qualitative r e s u l t s indicate t h a t high-energy t r i t o n s are emitted i n r e l a t i v e l y large abundance from a l l targets and with each of the bombarding p a r t i c l e s . Cross sections f o r t r i t o n production fr… more

MODIFICATION OF A DAMPOMETER FOR USE WITH A FREE-OSCILLATION DYNAMIC RIG

Description: Presented at the Eighth Meeting of the Supersonic Wind-Tunnel Assoc., Seattle, Wash. Oct. 1957. The Dampometer represents a harmonically damped oscillation by a rotating vector in such a way that the length of the vector is proportional to the damping. The device was designed for use with a forced oscillation dynamic testing, and its modification for use with a free oscillation rig is described. (T.R.H.)

COMPARISON OF STAGNATION PRESSURE CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR A 12-INCH BLOWDOWN TRANSONIC TUNNEL

Description: Presented at the Eight Meeting of the Supersonic Wind- Tunnel Association, Seattle, Wash., Oct. 1957. The two control systems are compared for nominal stagnation pressures of 16 and 34 psia. The improved performance of system B has resulted in increased Mach number capability of the tunnel, improved Mach number control during a run, and an increase in the run frequency. (W.L.H.)
