The Specialty Metal Provision and the Berry Amendment: Issues for Congress

Description: In order to protect the U.S. industrial base during periods of adversity and war, Congress passed a set of domestic source restrictions which became known as the Berry Amendment. Diamond-like atomic-scale composite films: Surface properties and stability studied by STM and AFM

Description: Amorphous ``diamond-like/quartz-like`` composites a-(C:H/Si:O) and metal containing a-(C:H/Si:O/Me) constitute a novel class of diamond-related materials with a number of unique bulk and surface properties. In order to gain a more fundamental understanding of the surface properties and stability of these solids we have performed a scanning tunneling and atomic force microscopy investigation of both a-(C:H/Si:O) and a-(C:H/Si:O/Me) films, including the effects of ion bombardment and annealing.

Ductile damage modeling based on void coalescence and percolation theories

Description: A general model for ductile damage in metals is presented. It includes damage induced by shear stress as well as damage caused by volumetric tension. Characterization and laboratory weathering studies

Description: Characterization studies of PFBC by-products were initiated to provide baseline information need to predict the behavior and suitability of PFBC by-products for beneficial uses. The chemical composition of the by-products was dominated by Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Al, and Si. All samples were highly alkaline with paste pH values ranging from 9.9 to 12.3.
