Mathematics Panel Semiannual Progress Report

Description: From July through December, a total of 1750 hr of computer time was used by programmers in "debugging" and in running problems. With the acquisition of a second operator, the evening shift was initiated. A night-shift operator is presently being trained, and third-shifts operations will probably begin after completion of the magnetic-tape memory. / Engineering time is regularly scheduled for 4 hr each morning and 1/2 hr late in the afternoon. An electronic technician is on duty during evening-s… more

An Elliptic Integral Computer Package for Magnetic Fields, Forces, and Mutual Inductances of Axisymmetric Systems, and a Versatile Line-Tracing Routine

Description: Report describing a set of high-precision routines for the IBM 7090 that perform efficiently the calculations most often required on axially symmetric magnetic systems. The routines compute the vector potential, field components, and the mixed gradient for current systems and for certain idealized distributions of magnetized matter. The programs for the current systems were developed from a set of six equations in elliptic integrals, which suffice when correlations are fully exploited for all t… more

The Effect of Gaps on Pile Reactivity

Description: From abstract: "The variation of the reactivity of a pile as a function of width of a transverse gap is obtained. The method involves first finding the boundary condition satisfied by the flux at the gap face. This, in principle, provides enough information for a complete solution of the pile equations. A method for calculating the reactivity change is presented. The calculated reactivity is compared with experiment and a brief discussion of the validity of the approximations is given."

Analysis of Bulk Shielding Facility Neutron Dosimeter Data

Description: Technical report calculating "effective removal cross sections" for Pb, Fe and O from measurements of fast neutron does in the water surrounding the BSF reactor. The values for Pb and Fe agree quite well with those previously determined from Lid tank data, whereas that for O is somewhat lower. [From Abstract]

Computer Programs Using Zonal Harmonics for Magnetic Properties of Current Systems with Special Reference to the IBM 7090

Description: Report that "discusses the magnetic vector and scalar potentials, magnetic field components and their derivatives, and flux linkage for single current systems, and the mutual inductance, forces and torques between two such systems, whose axes are coplanar but not necessarily coincident" (p. 1).

A Computer Code (CDC 1604A or IBM 7090) for Calculating the Cost of Shipping Spent Reactor Fuels as a Function of Burnup, Specific Power, Cooling Time, Fuel Composition, and Other Variables

Description: Report presenting the calculation of the costs incurred in shipping irradiated uranium-containing fuel elements. A computer code that designs a cask and calculates the shipping costs is presented. By use of the code, shipping costs were calculated for typical reactor fuels.

The X-Ray Spectra of Polonium Atomic Number 84

Description: From abstract: "Two samples, each containing an estimated 10 curies (2 mg) of polonium-210, were purified by vacuum distillation and evaporated onto oblique sections of X-ray targets made of copper. Four lines of the K series and ten lines of the L series of the X-ray spectrum of polonium were recorded with a one-meter transmission crystal spectrograph and a 25-centimeter Bragg spectrograph, respectively. Measured wavelengths agree approximately with values predicted by extrapolation of Moseley… more

Graduate Programs for the Health Physicist in the United States

Description: The first man-made nuclear reactor -- or "pile" as it was then called -- was rather hurriedly improvised and operated in a crowded space under the athletic bleachers of Stagg Field at the University of Chicago on December 2, 1942. Just prior to this time, there began the assembly of a group of physicists with an unusual assignment. They were determined that radiation hazards of unprecedented proportions must be coped with successfully in the conduct of reactor programs as planned. Since these p… more
