Steady State Temperature Distributions in Hollow Slugs

Description: This document is a sequel to HW-30226, "Steady State Temperature Distribution in a Solid Slug." A primary feature of the present as well as the former paper is a treatment of the stand heat flow equation in a manner which accounts accurately for the dependence of the thermal conductivity, K, on temperature, v.

The Ratio of Plutonium 239 to Uranium 235 Fission Cross Sections from 0.020 to 1.0 Electron Volts

Description: Foils of plutonium 239 and uranium 235 have been mounted back to back in a dual ionization fission chamber in the diffracted beam of the Hanford neutron crystal spectrometer. A quantity proportional to the ration of fission cross sections of Pu239 to U235 has been measured as a function of neutron energy from 0.020 to 1.0 electron volts. The results of this investigation are presented graphically in the text.

Resonance Capture of Neutrons in Metal and Oxide Cylinders

Description: Reactivity measurements conducted in the Hanford Test Pile are interpreted to yield resonance integrals for uranium, uranium oxide, thorium and thorium oxide. The experiments were made using cadmium filters and are discussed in terms of the multiplication factor of the Hanford Test Pile.

Temperature distribution in an inhomogeneous cell

Description: Report describing "the effects of variable graphite conductivity and of the gas layers in the lattice" under the assumptions that "graphice conductivity varies as a power of the distance from the center of each cell" and "uniform distribution of heat sources" - from abstract.

Resonance Capture of Neutrons by Thorium Cylinders

Description: The dependence of the resonance integral for thorium upon geometry and thorium temperature has been determined through reactivity coefficient measurements performed in the Hanford Test Pile. The geometry dependence was investigated using thorium cylinders of various diameters in the form of solid elements and shells. The temperature dependence (Doppler broadening) was studied by heating thorium elements and permitting them to cool while observing the change in pile reactivity.

Graphite Diffusion Length Measurements at Hanford

Description: A series of diffusion length measurements were carried out on graphite stacks of various constructions in an attempt to resolve the discrepancies between the graphite diffusion lengths measured in the Hanford reactors and that value measured in the Hanford Standard Pile. It was found that the diffusion length of the graphite in the Hanford reactors is in good agreement with the value for the Hanford Standard Pile when corrections are made for the absorption and scattering of neutrons by the alu… more

Hanford Test Pile

Description: The Hanford Test Pile is a heterogeneous, low power, graphite moderated natural uranium pile. The pile consists of an eighteen foot cube of graphite containing 292 charged channels in a square array with an 8-1/2-inch lattice spacing. This report describes the reactor and the operating procedures used, and presents the latest results of calibrations performed. These calibrations supersede other work which has been done on the Test Pile and contain refinements of most of the early calibrations.
