Relationship of Attitudes Toward Mathematics, School, and Teachers to Mathematics Achievement

Description: The present study was designed to investigate the interrelationships of various school-related attitudes and mathematics achievement in a sample of 104 fifth-grade students. A version of the Semantic Differential was used to assess student attitudes toward school, mathematics, teachers, and mathematics teachers. Achievement in mathematics was measured using the Wide Range Achievement Test and classroom grade in mathematics. Higher correlations between the attitude and achievement variables were… more

Experiences and Perceptions of Students in Music and Mathematics

Description: Since the time of Pythagoras, philosophers, educators, and researchers have theorized that connections exist between music and mathematics. While there is little doubt that engaging in musical or mathematical activities stimulates brain activity at high levels and that increased student involvement fosters a greater learning environment, several questions remain to determine if musical stimulation actually improves mathematic performance. This study took a qualitative approach that allowed 24 h… more

Supporting Mathematics Understanding Through Funds of Knowledge

Description: Parents are often criticized for the types of roles they play in their children’s education. Rather than assuming parents do not contribute to their children’s learning, this study identified the various ways Hispanic parents support mathematics learning in the home. Using a funds of knowledge lens, the history, practices, and experiences of families that contributed to their children’s mathematics understanding was explored. The purpose of this study was to identify the unique funds of knowled… more

The Impact of Reading Intervention on Student Achievement in Mathematics

Description: With high stakes testing in public schools, pressure for success prompts schools to implement intervention programs for reading and mathematics, often at the expense of extra-curricular and elective activities. Previous literature indicated a correlation between reading comprehension and mathematical understanding. This study examined the specific intervention programs being utilized by two rural Texas school districts and the impact these programs had on student mathematic scores as measured b… more

Effect of Time-Lapse Scheduling on Mathematics Achievement

Description: The purposes of the study were to (a) determine whether there was a significant difference in the mathematics achievement of students which may be attributed to any of the nine variations in trimester scheduling during the two-year period, and (b) to analyze the implications of trimester scheduling as they apply to teachers, counselors, and administrators in the middle school program. On the basis of careful treatment and analysis of data collected to ascertain the effect of time-lapse scheduli… more
