A Programmable MicroFluidic Processor: Integrated and Hybrid Solutions

Description: The Programmable Fluidic Processor (PFP), a device conceived of by researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center, is a reconfigurable and programmable bio-chemical analysis system designed for handheld operation in a variety of applications. Unlike most microfluidic systems which utilize channels to control fluids, the PFP device is a droplet-based system. The device is based on dielectrophoresis; a fluid transport phenomenon that utilizes mismatched polarizability between a droplet and its medium t… more

An English and Arabic Character Printer

Description: This paper is presented in satisfaction of the requirement for two problems in lieu of thesis which are required for the degree, Master of Science. The two problems are: (1) to provide an electric interface between the M6800 microprocessor and the printer; and (2) to design an Arabic character set and to provide the logic required for its implementation. As it would be artificial and impractical to document these problems separately, a single document here is provided.

The Decomposition of Solid Barium Nitrate by Gamma Rays

Description: There was considerable disagreement between results obtained by early investigators who studied the interaction of ionizing radiations with solid nitrates. It was thought worthwhile, therefore, to extend their work and to make certain that reproducible results were being obtained. It was expected that the nitrite ion and oxygen would be found in equivalent amounts in the irradiated samples. Four measurements of nitrite ion and oxygen indicate that the decomposition of barium nitrate by gamma r… more

Development of an Electrical Resistivity Probe For Void-Fraction Measurements in Air-Water Flow

Description: "Work has been done on the adaptation of an electrical probe, developed by Neal for the measurement of local void fractions in mercury-nitrogen flow, to air-water flow. The adaptation is more difficult because of wetting of the probe by water. Various probe shapes and filming agents were employed without great success" (p. 1).

The Crystal Structure of LiCuCl3-2H2O*

Description: This report undertakes research to study LiCuCl3-2H2O is from a structural standpoint, revealing the oxygen positions. The study uses the Levy-Bussing anisotropic temperature factor treatment and least squares program to determine a discrepancy factor for the visually determined intensities. The structure of the molecule is also found to have interesting magnetic properties which has inspired a new study at Brookhaven.

Implementation of an interactive matching scheme for the Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij equations in the WARP code

Description: The WARP code is a robust electrostatic particle-in-cell simulation package used to model charged particle beams with strong space-charge forces. A fundamental operation associated with seeding detailed simulations of a beam transport channel is to generate initial conditions where the beam distribution is matched to the structure of a periodic focusing lattice. This is done by solving for periodic, matched solutions to a coupled set of ODEs called the Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij (KV) envelope equ… more

Evaluation of the solar building, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Final report, April 1974-September 1978

Description: During portions of the 1974-1975 and 1975-1976 winter heating seasons, a field evaluation was made of a solar-assisted heat pump heating system in a small commercial office building in Albuquerque, N.M. The system was comprised of one main water-to-water heat pump and five small water-to-air heat pumps. The liquid-type solar collector array had an area equivalent to about 10% of the building floor area. Other than the ethylene glycol/water solution circulated through the solar collector array, … more

Cyclic Polarization of AA 3102 in Corrosive Electrolytes Containing Sodium Chloride and Ammonium Sulfate

Description: Corrosion of all aluminum microchannel heat exchangers present a challenge in automotive and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industries. Reproducibility of Salt Water Acetic Acid Test (SWAAT) has been questioned and a need to new corrosion tests with better reproducibility has risen. Cyclic polarization, that is an electrochemical test, was explored for its suitability for the assessment of AA 3102 tube material that is currently a popular aluminum alloy used in manufacturing… more

Ambient and elevated temperature fracture and cyclic-fatigue properties in a series of Al-containing silicon carbides

Description: A series of in situ toughened, Al, B and C containing, silicon carbide ceramics (ABC-SiC) has been examined with Al contents varying from 3 to 7 wt%. With increasing Al additions, the grain morphology in the as-processed microstructures varied from elongated to bimodal to equiaxed, with a change in the nature of the grain-boundary film from amorphous to partially crystalline to fully crystalline. Fracture toughness and cyclic fatigue tests on these microstructures revealed that although the 7 w… more
