Description: As part of a general program to study combustion in the engine cylinder and to correlate the phenomena of combustion with the observed performance of actual engines, this paper presents a sketchy outline of what may happen in the engine cylinder during the burning of a charge. It also suggests the type of information needed to supply the details of the picture and points out how combustion time and rate affect the performance of the engine. A theoretical concept of a flame front which is assumed to advance radially from the point of ignition is presented, and calculations based on the area and velocity of this flame and the density of the unburned gases are made to determine the mass rate of combustion. From this rate the mass which has been burned and the pressure at any instant during combustion are computed. This process is then reversed in an effort to determine actual rates of combustion and flame velocities from the pressures as recorded on indicator diagrams. The effects of different rates of combustion on engine performance are then discussed and the importance of proper spark advance is emphasized.

Description: This investigation describes a visual method for making stroboscopic observations, through a large number of small windows, of the spread of flame throughout the combustion chamber of a gasoline engine. Data, secured by this method on a small engine burning gaseous fuels, are given to show the effects of mixture ratio, spark advance, engine speed, charge density, degree of dilution, compression ratio, and fuel composition on flame movement in the cylinder. Partial indicator diagrams showing pressure development during the combustion period are included. Although present knowledge is not sufficient to permit qualitative evaluation of the separate effects on flame movement of chemical reaction velocity, thermal expansion of burned gases, resonance, turbulence, and piston movement, the qualitative influence of certain of these factors on some of the diagrams is indicated.

The principal factors influencing flame movement in the engine are discussed, and the lack of reliable information regarding their separate effects upon the structure of the flame and its speed of propagation are emphasized.

Infrared radiation from explosions in a spark-ignition engine

Description: This report presents the results of an investigation to determine the variations in intensity and spectral distribution of the radiant energy emitted by the flames during normal and knocking explosions in an engine. Radiation extending into the infrared was transmitted by a window of fluorite, placed either near the spark plug or over the detonation zone at opposite ends of the combustion chamber. Concave, surface-silvered mirrors focused the beam, first at the slit of a stroboscope which opened for about 2 degrees of crank angle at any desired point in the engine cycle, and then upon the target of a sensitive thermocouple for measuring radiation intensity. Spectral distribution of the radiant energy was determined by placing over the window, one at a time, a series of five filters selected with a view to identifying, as far as possible without the use of a spectrograph, the characteristic emissions of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and incandescent carbon.

Flame speeds and energy considerations for explosions in a spherical bomb

Description: Simultaneous measurements were made of the speed of flame and the rise in pressure during explosions of mixtures of carbon monoxide, normal heptane, iso-octane, and benzene in a 10-inch spherical bomb with central ignition. From these records, fundamental properties of the explosive mixtures, which are independent of the apparatus, were computed. The transformation velocity, or speed at which flame advances into and transforms the explosive mixture, increases with both the temperature and the pressure of the unburned gas. The rise in pressure was correlated with the mass of charge inflamed to show the course of the energy developed.
