Towards a summary documentation of the AMIP models for the World-Wide Web

Description: The Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AIMP) is an international effort to simulate the global climate of the period 1979--1988 by specifying certain common boundary conditions and radiative forcings. Work is in progress to translate the AIMP summary documentation into Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) for use with the public-domain Mosaic software. We are exploiting the hypertext attributes of this software to permit rapid access to those facets of the AIMP documentation that are of mos… more

Converting hard copy documents for electronic dissemination

Description: Since the advent of computer systems, the goal of a paperless office, and even a paperless society, has been pursued. While the normal paper flow in an organization is far from totally automated, particularly for items requiring signatures or authorizations, electronic information dissemination is becoming an almost simple task. The reasons for providing on-line documents are many and include faster and easier access for everyone, elimination of printing costs, reduction of wasted shelf and des… more

Teaching internet use to adult learners: The LANL experience

Description: The Research library at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been teaching an Internet class to adult learners since May 1994. The class is a team effort, combining lecture/demo with hands-on practice using Gopher and the World Wide Web. What started out as a small short-term project has become a weekly class available to any Lab employee or associate. More than 250 people have been taught to find basic reference materials and to navigate the Internet on the Gopher and World Wide Web. The class i… more

Characterization and assessment of HTML style guides

Description: This paper describes a study in which HTML style guides were characterized, compared to established HCI style guides, and evaluated against findings from HCI reviews of web paces and applications. Findings showed little consistency among the 21 HTML style guides assessed, with 75% of recommendations appearing in only one style guide. While there was some overlap, only 20% of HTML relevant recommendations from established style guides were found in HTML style guides. HTML style guides emphasized… more

Security incidents on the Internet, 1989--1995

Description: This paper presents an analysis of trends in Internet security based on an investigation of 4,299 Internet security-related incidents reported to the CERT{reg_sign} Coordination Center (CERT{reg_sign}/CC) from 1989 through 1995. Prior to this research, knowledge of actual Internet security incidents was limited and primarily anecdotal. This research: (1) developed a taxonomy to classify Internet attacks and incidents, (2) organized, classified, and analyzed CERT{reg_sign}/CC incident records, (… more

Feedback from users of energy efficiency information on the Internet: Analysis of the US CADDET home page

Description: This paper describes the US experience to date with providing energy efficiency information from the Center for the Analysis and Dissemination of Demonstrated Energy Technologies (CADDET) on the Internet. The paper begins by describing the way that information is displayed in the US CADDET home page system. Statistics are then provided on numbers and types of users of the home page. Next we describe the frequency with which different types of CADDET information have been accessed and summarize … more

Information flow in the DAMA Project beyond database managers: Information flow managers

Description: To meet the demands of commercial data traffic on the information highway, a new look at managing data is necessary. One projected activity, sharing of point-of-sale information, is being considered in the Demand Activated Manufacturing Project of the American Textile Partnership project. A scenario is examined in which 100,000 retail outlets communicate over a period of days. They provide the latest estimate of demand for sewn products across a chain of 26,000 suppliers through the use of bill… more

Improved oil recovery for independent oil and gas producers

Description: There are more than fifty-two hundred independent oil and gas producers operating in the US today (based on current IPAA membership figures). Many of these companies have instituted improved oil recovery programs in some form, but very few have had access to the state-of-the-art modeling technology routinely used by major producers to manage these projects. Since independent operators are playing an increasingly important role in production of hydrocarbons in the US, it is important to promote … more

Matrix market: a web resource for test matrix collection

Description: We describe a repository of data for the testing of numerical algorithms and mathematical software for matrix computations. The repository is designed to accommodate both dense and sparse matrices, as well as software to generate matrices. It has been seeded with the well known Harwell-Boeing sparse matrix collection. The raw data files have been augmented with an integrated World Wide Web interface which describes the matrices in the collection quantitatively and visually, For example, each ma… more

Mac-based Web authoring: How to learn as little Unix as possible while getting on the Web.

Description: This document is a general guide for creating Web pages, using commonly available word processing and file transfer applications. It is not a full guide to HTML, nor does it provide an introduction to the many WYSIWYG HTML editors available. The viability of the authoring method it describes will not be affected by changes in the HTML specification or the rapid release-and-obsolescence cycles of commercial WYSIWYG HTML editors. This document provides a gentle introduction to HTML for the beginn… more
