Civilian Nuclear Waste Disposal
Date: August 30, 2011
Creator: Holt, Mark
Description: This report looks at the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA), Yucca Mountain, and the Obama Administration's de-funding of Yucca Mountain. Federal policy is based on the premise that nuclear waste can be disposed of safely, but proposed storage and disposal facilities have frequently been challenged on safety, health, and environmental grounds. Most of the current debate surrounding civilian radioactive waste focuses on highly radioactive spent fuel from nuclear power plants.

Nuclear Waste Disposal: Alternatives to Yucca Mountain
Date: February 6, 2009
Creator: Holt, Mark
Description: Under the current nuclear waste program, DOE hopes to begin transporting spent nuclear fuel and other highly radioactive waste to Yucca Mountain by 2020. If the Obama Administration decides to halt the Yucca Mountain project, it has a variety of tools available to implement that policy. This report discusses those options and the likely impact of indefinite delays in the waste program. It then discusses the mid- and long-term alternatives to the existing waste program, and finally reviews the history of U.S. efforts to site nuclear waste facilities.
