Recycled used fluorescent light tube solar water heater. Final technical report

Description: A project to investigate methods that might be used to utilize old fluorescent light tubes as solar water heater components then to produce a booklet of instructions for others to use to construct their own water heaters is described. Various methods of opening, cleaning and shaping the ends of the tubes were attempted. The reflective material needed inside some of the heaters was mylar and worked quite well but the Btu gain was disappointing. There were problems with the cement used and epoxy … more

Coal as an option for power generation in US territories of the Pacific

Description: A survey of general considerations relating to the use of coal in US territories and trust territories of the Pacific suggests that coal is a viable option for power generation. Future coal supplies, principally from Australia and the west coast of America, promise to be more than adequate, but large bulk carriers will probably not be able to land coal directly because of inadequate port facilities. Hence, smaller than Panamax-class vessels (60,000 dwt) or some arrangement utilizing self-loadin… more

Environmental monitoring and assessment program at potential OTEC sites

Description: Ecologically sound operations of projected Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plants can be insured by careful attention to the marine environment during the design phase. This requires quality information from regions of potential OTEC interest, coordinated with required assessment studies to insure legal compliance. Currently, preliminary or actual surveys and laboratory studies are being conducted in the waters of Puerto Rico, the Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii, and Guam for potential moored or … more

OTEC thermal resource report for Guam

Description: The temperature difference resource of Guam is unsurpassed among the ten sites studied under the present contract. The monthly mean surface temperatures are consistently high throughout the year, ranging from 27.7 to 29.2/sup 0/C. Consistently large ..delta..T values are available throughout the year, with small variability. An annual average ..delta..T greater than 20/sup 0/C is available at depths of slightly less than 500 meters. Potential OTEC sites off Guam would require cable lengths of l… more

Municipal solid waste energy conversion study on Guam and American Samoa

Description: In the Pacific Islands of Guam and Tutuila in American Samoa, conversion of municipal solid waste to useable energy forms - principally electricity but possibly steam - may hold promise for reducing economic dependence on imported petroleum. A secondary benefit may be derived from reduction of solid waste landfill requirements. At the preliminary planning stage, waste-to-energy facilities producing electricity appear technically and environmentally feasible. Economically, the projects appear ma… more
