Army Gas-Cooled Reactor Systems Program Monthly Progress Report: April 1959

Description: Abstract: This monthly progress report covers the activities of the Army Gas-Cooled Reactor System Program for April 1959. The program includes a water-moderated heterogeneous reactor (Gas-Cooled Reactor Experiment I), a graphite-moderated homogeneous reactor (Gas-Cooled Reactor Experiment II), a mobile gas-cooled reactor (ML-1), and the coordination of the Gas Turbine Test Facility. [It reports] the progress of each project, the associated tests and data evaluation, the applicable design crit… more

Recoil Activity from Stainless-Steel Cladding: a Major Contribution to Coolant-Stream Radioactivity in GCR-2

Description: From abstract: An estimate is presented of the radioactivity in the helium coolant of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, GCR-2, due to entry into the coolant of recoil nuclei from neutron-induced reactions which take place in the fuel element cladding, type 304 stainless steel. Two systems were considered: one without a filter and the other utilizing a by-pass filter designed to reduce the concentration of contaminants in the coolant.

Purification of Carbon Dioxide for Reactor Purposes. Part III, Drying

Description: Comparison of the adsorption characteristics of the desiccants silica gel, alumina, and molecular sieves has shown that molecular sieves have by far the greatest capacity of the desiccants at the low partial pressures considered. Equilibrium data in the form of isotherms were established over the range of variables expected in the coolant circuit of a proposed Australian H.T.G.C. reactor. The mass transfer from the gas phase to molecular sieves is such that no correlation could be attempted for… more
