Laboratory instrument design progress report, July 1--31, 1948

Description: One current model Ryerson quartz-fiber microbalance fitted with a quartz-fiber beam but lacking the entire optical system was received from Argonne National Laboratory on June 30, 1948. The first trails of the fiber drawing machine indicated excessive vibration originating in the motorized variable-speed transmissions and accentuated by the machine frame. Isolation of the motorized transmission vibrations from the drawing machine permitted successful drawing on first trials of the eight diamete… more

Investigation of the Stack Gas Filtering Requirements and Development of Suitable Filters. Report No. 5

Description: Investigation of dust loading capacity for various assemblies of air filter media on atmospheric dust has continued using the small tester described in previous reports. The effect of fiber size and packing density in Fiberglas mat has been studied. The combination of very fine fibered glass mats now in use at Oak Ridge was given special investigation. Tests were made using a coarser mat as a prefilter and an economic advantage was showm for such protection. As a result of laboratory studies on… more

Properties of certain intermetallics as related to elevated-temperature applications 1: molybdenum disilicide

Description: Report presenting a method for the preparation and purification of the intermetallic molybdenum desilicide was developed and its properties were determined. Chemical properties were found to be highly inert, unattacked by boiling hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, or aqueous sodium hydroxide, slightly attacked by nitric acid, and dissolved by molten sodium hydroxide. Other mechanical properties of the material were also provided.

Errors in indicated strain for a typical wire strain gage caused by restraining, temperature changes, and weathering

Description: Report presenting testing on a wire strain gage of representative design to determine zero shift after straining at room temperature, error in indicated strains at high and low temperature, and changes in calibration factor and zero shift after exposure to heavy weathering. Results regarding the measurements of zero shift after 1 to 10 cycles of straining and testing to determine whether or not zero shift was removed by prestraining reappeared after the gages were left unstrained are provided.
