Investigation of the Stack Gas Filtering Requirements and Development of Suitable Filters. Report No. 5

Description: Investigation of dust loading capacity for various assemblies of air filter media on atmospheric dust has continued using the small tester described in previous reports. The effect of fiber size and packing density in Fiberglas mat has been studied. The combination of very fine fibered glass mats now in use at Oak Ridge was given special investigation. Tests were made using a coarser mat as a prefilter and an economic advantage was showm for such protection. As a result of laboratory studies onā€¦ more

Laboratory instrument design progress report, July 1--31, 1948

Description: One current model Ryerson quartz-fiber microbalance fitted with a quartz-fiber beam but lacking the entire optical system was received from Argonne National Laboratory on June 30, 1948. The first trails of the fiber drawing machine indicated excessive vibration originating in the motorized variable-speed transmissions and accentuated by the machine frame. Isolation of the motorized transmission vibrations from the drawing machine permitted successful drawing on first trials of the eight diameteā€¦ more

A Study of Recommended Procedures for the Care and Maintenance of Football Equipment and the Development of a Handbook of Instructions

Description: The problem of this study was to determine the best methods in relation to caring for materials that compose football equipment by studying the recommendations suggested by those who manufacture the materials; and also to report the results on information received as to how to care for and maintain the materials commonly found in football equipment. Further, the problem was to write a handbook of instructions for the care and maintenance of football equipment.

The Preparation of Stones of Walker County, Texas for Use as Sets in Jewelry

Description: Since the East Texas area has many minerals in the categories which yield semiprecious stones of commercial value--jasper, wood agate, wood opal, and silicified stone, the author undertook this study to determine: (1) the extent which these minerals could be utilized as sources for gems; (2) the equipment necessary for cutting and polishing the stones; and (3) the techniques for finishing the gems.

The Problem of Thermal-Expansion Stresses in Reinforced Plastics

Description: Report presenting an analysis of the failure of adhesive bonds and its relation to boundary stress concentrations. A variety of material combinations, including metals and plastics, were examined and stress tested. The method of computing the thermal coefficients is applied to mixtures and especially to reinforced plastics.

Data on Material Properties and Panel Compressive Strength of a Plastic-Bonded Material of Glass Cloth and Canvas

Description: Results are presented of tests for determining the tensile, compressive, and bending properties of a material of plastic-bonding glass cloth and canvas layers. In addition, 10 panel specimens were tested in compression. Although the material is not satisfactory for primary structural use in aircraft when compared on a strength-weight basis with other materials in common use, there appears to be potential strength in the material that will require research for development. These points are consiā€¦ more

The Mechanical Properties of Wood of Different Moisture Content Within -200 Degrees to +200 Degrees C Temperature Range

Description: Systematic experiments were undertaken with special reference to the effect of gross specific weight (specific weight inclusive of pores) and the moisture content of wood. It was found that the modules of elasticity of wood at room temperature and frozen at -8 degrees is practically the same. The effect of moisture on the compression strength of frozen wood was explored as well as the flexural and impact strength of frozen wood and frozen laminated wood.

A visual photographic study of cylinder lubrication

Description: From Summary: "A V-type engine provided with a glass cylinder was used to study visually the lubrication characteristics of an aircraft-type piston. Photographs and data were obtained with the engine motored at engine speeds up to 1000 r.p.m. and constant cylinder-head pressures of 0 and 50 pounds per square inch. A study was made of the orientation of the piston under various operating conditions, which indicated that the piston was inclined with the crown nearest the major-thrust cylinder facā€¦ more

Buckling Tests on Eccentrically Loaded Beam Columns

Description: "Formulas are obtained for computing the buckling load of rods eccentrically loaded at each end, the computation being extended in particular to the inelastic range. The test results are graphically presented on three sets of curves. Two of these, at least for the elastic range, are independent of the material tested. The third set, which is independent of the material, possesses greater clearness and is therefore used for comparing the test results with the theoretical" (p. 1).
