Coordination chemistry of several radius-sensitive complexones and applications to lanthanide-actinide separations

Description: The relationships between the lanthanide complex formation equilibria and the lanthanide-actinide separation application of three radius sensitive ligands have been studied. The consecutive stepwise formation constants of the 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 chelate species formed by the interaction of DHDMB and the tripositive lanthanides and yttrium were determined potentiometrically at 0.1 M ionic strength and 25/sup 0/C. Results indicate that three different coordination modes, one tridentate and two bide… more

Benefits analysis for the production of fuels and chemicals using solar thermal energy. Final report

Description: Numerous possibilities exist for using high temperature solar thermal energy in the production of various chemicals and fuels (Sun Fuels). Research and development activities have focused on the use of feedstocks such as coal and biomass to provide synthesis gas, hydrogen, and a variety of other end-products. A Decision Analysis technique geared to the analysis of Sun Fuels options was developed. Conventional scoring methods were combined with multi-attribute utility analysis in a new approach … more

The Coastal Ocean Prediction Systems program: Understanding and managing our coastal ocean. Volume 1: Strategic summary

Description: The proposed COPS (Coastal Ocean Prediction Systems) program is concerned with combining numerical models with observations (through data assimilation) to improve our predictive knowledge of the coastal ocean. It is oriented toward applied research and development and depends upon the continued pursuit of basic research in programs like COOP (Coastal Ocean Processes); i.e., to a significant degree it is involved with ``technology transfer`` from basic knowledge to operational and management app… more

Regulatory Orientation, Message Framing and Influences of Fit on Customer Behaviors

Description: Existing literature on consumer behavior has argued that an individual’s regulatory orientation interacts with message framing. If there is a match between regulatory orientation (promotion versus prevention) and message framing, this results in positive attitudes toward a given advertisement. Conversely, if there is a mismatch, the effect is opposite, i.e., attitudes toward that advertisement are less positive and less favorable. This research extends the term of compatibility by examining ho… more

Toward a General Theory for Multiphase Turbulence Part I: Development and Gauging of the Model Equations

Description: A formalism for developing multiphase turbulence models is introduced by analogy to the phenomenological method used for single-phase turbulence. A sample model developed using the formalism is given in detail. The procedure begins with ensemble averaging of the exact conservation equations, with closure accomplished by using a combination of analytical and experimental results from the literature. The resulting model is applicable to a wide range of common multiphase flows including gas-solid,… more

Social Discourse in the Savoy Theatre's Productions of The Nautch Girl (1891) and Utopia Limited (1893): Exoticism and Victorian Self-Reflection

Description: As a consequence to Gilbert and Sullivan's famed Carpet Quarrel, two operettas with decidedly "exotic" themes, The Nautch Girl; or, The Rajah of Chutneypore, and Utopia Limited; or, The Flowers of Progress were presented to London audiences. Neither has been accepted as part of the larger Savoy canon. This thesis considers the conspicuous business atmosphere of their originally performed contexts to understand why this situation arose. Critical social theory makes it possible to read the two … more

Flu Vaccine: Recent Supply Shortages Underscore Ongoing Challenges

Description: Testimony issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins "Influenza is associated with an average of 36,000 deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations each year in the United States. Persons who are aged 65 and older, people with chronic medical conditions, children younger than 2 years, and pregnant women are more likely to get severe complications from influenza than other people. The best way to prevent influenza is to be vaccinated each fall. In early October… more

KIVA computer program for multidimensional chemically reactive fluid flows with fuel sprays

Description: This paper is a presentation of the capabilities of the KIVA computer program, which was written to calculate both two- and three-dimensional chemically reactive fluid flows. KIVA solves by finite-difference techniques the unsteady equations for a multi-component, chemically reactive mixture of ideal gases, together with those for an evaporating liquid spray. Although it was written with applications to internal combustion engine research in mind, with modification KIVA can be applied to a vari… more

Relativistic Few Body Calculations

Description: A modern treatment of the nuclear few-body problem must take into account both the quark structure of baryons and mesons, which should be important at short range, and the relativistic exchange of mesons, which describes the long range, peripheral interactions.A way to model both of these aspects is described. The long range, peripheral interactions are calculated using the spectator model, a general approach in which the spectators to nucleon interactions are put on their mass-shell. Recent num… more

Concept Vs. Intuition: A Study Into the Personal Understanding of Images

Description: I was curious as to what my work was about and what images were important to me. There had to be a reason why I was driven to do what I did, whether it was a conscious, conceptual purpose or a subconscious, intuitive reason. The problem of this investigation was to discover which of these I used in the creation of my images or whether I used both.

Femtosecond Laser Materials Processing

Description: The use of femtosecond lasers allows materials processing of practically any material with extremely high precision and minimal collateral damage. Advantages over conventional laser machining (using pulses longer than a few tens of picoseconds) are realized by depositing the laser energy into the electrons of the material on a time scale short compared to the transfer time of this energy to the bulk of the material, resulting in increased ablation efficiency and negligible shock or thermal stre… more

Hyper-fast interstellar travel via a modification of spacetime geometry

Description: We analyze difficulties with proposals for hyper-fast interstellar travel via modifying the spacetime geometry, using as illustrations the Alcubierre warp drive and the Krasnikov tube. As it is easy to see, no violations of local causality or any other known physical principles are involved as far as motion of spacecrafts is concerned. However, the generation and support of the appropriate spacetime geometry configurations does create problems, the most significant of which are a violation of t… more

Statistical on-chip interconnect modeling : an application of automatic differentiation.

Description: Automatic differentiation is a technique for computing derivatives accurately and efficiently with minimal human effort. We employed this technique to generate derivative information of FCAP2 (2-D) and FCAP3 (3-D) programs that simulate the parasitic effects of interconnects and devices. This derivative information is used in the statistical modeling of worst-case interconnect delays and on-chip crosstalks. The ADIC (Automatic Differentiation in C) tool generated new versions of FCAP2 and FCAP3… more

BioSig: A bioinformatic system for studying the mechanism of intra-cell signaling

Description: Mapping inter-cell signaling pathways requires an integrated view of experimental and informatic protocols. BioSig provides the foundation of cataloging inter-cell responses as a function of particular conditioning, treatment, staining, etc. for either in vivo or in vitro experiments. This paper outlines the system architecture, a functional data model for representing experimental protocols, algorithms for image analysis, and the required statistical analysis. The architecture provides remote … more

Ultrarelativistic cascades and strangeness production

Description: A two phase cascade, LUCIFER II, developed for the treatment of ultra high energy Ion-Ion collisions is applied to the production of strangeness at SPS energies. This simulation is able to simultaneously describe both hard processes such as Drell-Yan and slower, soft processes such as the production of light mesons by separating the dynamics into two steps, a fast cascade involving only the nucleons in the original colliding relativistic ions followed, after an appropriate delay, by a normal mu… more
