Feasibility study for anaerobic digestion of agricultural crop residues. Final report

Description: This study provides cost estimates for the pretreatment/digestion of crop residues to fuel gas. Agricultural statistics indicate that the crop residues wheat straw, corn stover, and rice straw are available in sufficient quantity to provide meaningful supplies of gas. Engineering economic analyses were performed for digestion of sheat straw, corn stover, and rice straw for small farm, cooperative, and industrial scales. The results of the analyses indicate that the production of fuel gas from t… more

Report on the design and operation of a full-scale anaerobic dairy manure digester. Final report

Description: A full-scale anaerobic digester on the Monroe State Dairy Farm was operated and monitored for 24 months with funding provided by the United States Department of Energy, Fuels from Biomass Systems Branch. During the period of operation, operating parameters were varied and the impact of those changes is described. Operational experiences and system component performance are discussed. Internal digester mixing equipment was found to be unnecessary, and data supporting this conclusion are given. A… more

Solar-powered irrigation systems. Technical progress report, July 1977--January 1978

Description: Dispersed solar thermal power systems applied to farm irrigation energy needs are analyzed. The 17 western states, containing 84% of nationwide irrigated croplands and consuming 93% of nationwide irrigation energy, have been selected to determine were solar irrigation systems can compete most favorably with conventional energy sources. Financial analysis of farms, according to size and ownership, was accomplished to permit realistic comparative analyses of system lifetime costs. Market potentia… more

Wind energy applications in agriculture: executive summary. Final report

Description: This report presents an assessment of the potential use of wind turbine generator systems (WTGS) in US agriculture. In particular, this report presents the number of WTGS's economically feasible for use in US agriculture and the conditions which yielded economic feasibility of WTGS's for certain agricultural applications. In addition, for each case, i.e., set of assumed conditions, under which WTGS's were found to be economically feasible, this report identifies (1) the agricultu… more

Economic and kinetic studies of the production of chemicals and farm energy by fermentation of biomass

Description: The farm energy system has been constructed in Drury, Missouri. The purpose of this unit is to demonstrate the feasibility of producing energy for farms (heat and electricity) from methane produced by anaerobic digestion of crop residues and other crop materials. The acid hydrolysis pre-treatment of corn stover studies utilize a two stage sulfuric acid contact. In the first stage, dilute sulfuric acid is used to hydrolyze the pentosan fraction of ground biomass. The second stage uses concentrat… more

Livestock farm management, electronics and automation

Description: Microcomputer hardware is being mass marketed which can keep livestock farm records and aid management decision making. Electronic equipment is being sold to automatically control and monitor individual animal feed consumption and milk production. Body temperature can be electronically measured. Agricultural economists should analyze this new technology.

Geothermal energy development in Colorado. Appendix 7 of regional operations research program for development of geothermal energy in the Southwest United States. Final technical report, June 1977--August 1978

Description: The term ''geothermal energy'' is a term that means different things to different people. To an increasing number, it means a practical, environmentally compatible energy resource that can, right now, help to relieve an overdependency upon fossil fuels. The potential for use of geothermal energy in Colorado seems to be substantial. As described by Barrett and Pearl (1978), at least 56 separate areas have surface manifestations of hydrothermal (hot water) resources. These areas are estimated to … more

Feasibility study for anaerobic digestion of agricultural crop residues. Dynatech report No. 1935

Description: The objective of this study was to provide cost estimates for the pretreatment/digestion of crop residues to fuel gas. A review of agricultural statistics indicated that the crop residues wheat straw, corn stover, and rice straw are available in sufficient quantity to provide meaningful supplies of gas. Engineering economic analyses were performed for digestion of wheat straw, corn stover, and rice straw for small farm-, cooperative-, and industrial scales. The small farm scale processed the re… more

Farm Fuel Alcohol Project: preliminary report on facility design

Description: This report describes the design of a farm-based ethanol production system to be built by TVA at Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This facility will include cooking, fermentation, and distillation equipment to allow production of 8000 to 12,000 gallons of fuel ethanol during a three to four month period each year. Output will be about 10 gallons of 190-proof ethanol per hour. Present components are sized to allow 12 to 14 hour daily operation as a semi-continuous batch system. Intent of the project is t… more

Biomass energy success stories: a portfolio illustrating current economic uses of renewable biomass energy

Description: This second edition of the Biomass Energy Success Stories covers a wide range of examples of organizations which have experienced economic benefits by substituting renewable biomass energy for non-renewable fossil fuels. In addition to the broader spectrum of industry seen to be pursuing this approach, the cases illustrate a move towards innovative and technologically more sophisticated approaches. For example, the Quebec Community's thermal accumulator acts as a buffer to accommodate the varia… more

Survey and screening of intermediate-size photovoltaic total energy and electric applications

Description: One of the principal objectives of this photovoltaic mission analysis effort has been to identify and evaluate applications for photovoltaic solar energy conversion that could lead to significant contributions to the national energy supply and that would provide attractive opportunities for application experiments aimed at stimulating the adoption of photovoltaic technology. The scope of the study has included applications both for electric-only photovoltaic (PV) systems and for photovoltaic to… more
