Solar energy task force report technical training guidelines

Description: Guidelines are offered for programs oriented to commercial applications in solar energy, specifically water and space heating. These technologies are examined because they are, in some cases, economicaly feasible. Sample curricula and programs, technical jobs and skills, and equipment are suggested to assist those institutions contemplating the development of technical training. (MHR)

Principles of models based engineering

Description: This report describes a Models Based Engineering (MBE) philosophy and implementation strategy that has been developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory`s Center for Advanced Engineering Technology. A major theme in this discussion is that models based engineering is an information management technology enabling the development of information driven engineering. Unlike other information management technologies, models based engineering encompasses the breadth of engineering information, from des… more

Mixer pump test plan for double-shell tank AZ-101. Revision 1

Description: Westinghouse Hanford Company has undertaken the task to develop and demonstrate a method of retrieval for double-shell tank waste. Mixer pumps were chosen as the planned method of retrieval for DSTs, based on engineering technology studies, past experience with hydraulic sluicing at the Hanford Site, and experience with mixer pumps at the Westinghouse Savannah River Site.

[A man stands in front of the Industrial Arts building, 2]

Description: Photograph of a man, last name Barton, standing in front of the Industrial Arts building. He wears a black suit and tie and holds a hat in his right hand. The wind blows the bottom of his jacket open. He stands angled toward the right of the photo, with his hands at his sides. He looks in the same direction through horn-rimmed glasses. To the left of the photo, some landscaping and a few tree branches are seen.

Heavy metal contamination in TIMS Branch sediments

Description: The objective of this memorandum is to summarize results of previous sediment studies on Tims Branch and Steed's Pond conducted by Health Protection (HP) and by the Savannah River Laboratory (SRL) in conjunction with Reactor Materials Engineering Technology (RMET). The results for other heavy metals, such as lead, nickel, copper, mercury, chromium, cadmium, zinc, and thorium are also summarized.

Analysis of SBTF quadelliptical furnaces. [LMFBR]

Description: A computer model was developed which predicts the axial temperature profile and heat flux at the outer surface of the test section of the Sodium Boiling Test Facility constructed by the Engineering Technology Division at ORNL. The model was in agreement with observed temperature profiles at furnace power levels representative of single phase, dual phase, and dry-out operations. A parametric study demonstrated the effect of sodium flow rate and surface emissivities on the predicted temperature p… more

FINESSE: study of the issues, experiments and facilities for fusion nuclear technology research and development. Interim report. Volume III

Description: This chapter deals with the analysis and engineering scaling of solid breeded blankets. The limits under which full component behavior can be achieved under changed test conditions are explored. The characterization of these test requirements for integrated testing contributes to the overall test matrix and test plan for the understanding and development of fusion nuclear technology. The second chapter covers the analysis and engineering scaling of liquid metal blankets. The testing goals for a… more

Global positioning system reobservations over the Eastern United States Strain Monitoring Network

Description: In the period March--May, 1990, a 45 station geodetic network, originally established in November--December, 1987, was reobserved using global positioning system (GPS) technology. This network, known as the Eastern US Strain network, was established for the purpose of determining strain and deformation in the central and eastern US. This 1990 reobservation was the first of a series of reobservations scheduled to take place over a decade in order to place meaningful constraints on the small diff… more

Design of the IPIRG-2 Simulated Seismic Forcing Function

Description: A series of pipe system experiments was conducted in IPIRG-2 that used a realistic seismic forcing function. Because the seismic forcing function was more complex than the single-frequency increasing-amplitude sinusoidal forcing function used in the IPIRG-1 pipe system experiments, considerable effort went into designing the function. This report documents the design process for the seismic forcing function used in the IPIRG-2 pipe system experiments.
