Drainage-flow studies in the Geysers geothermal area of California

Description: The emission of pollutants by geothermal power plants at the Geysers geothermal area produces air quality problems under drainage flow conditions. Meteorological data were obtained in the Anderson Creek Valley of the Geysers region to identify the conditions that produce nocturnal drainage winds. Data from six tethersonde stations were averaged for the nights with drainage flow. These data compared favorably with a simple drainage flow model developed by the Savannah River Laboratory.

Beta-decay measurements of neutron-deficient cesium isotopes

Description: Beta decay endpoint energy measurements of the neutron deficient cesium isotopes were done using an energy spectrum shape fitting technique. This was a departure from the typical method of endpoint energy analysis, the Fermi-Kurie plot. A discussion of the shape fitting procedure and its improved features are discussed. These beta endpoint measurements have led to total decay energies (Q/sub EC/) of the neutron deficient /sup 119/ /sup 123/Cs isotopes. The total decay energies of /sup 122m/Cs (… more

Evidence for bimodal fission in the heaviest elements

Description: We have measured the mass and kinetic-energy partitioning in the spontaneous fission of five heavy nuclides: /sup 258/Fm, /sup 259/Md, /sup 260/Md /sup 258/No, and /sup 260/(104). Each was produced by heavy-ion reactions with either /sup 248/Cm, /sup 249/Bk, or /sup 254/Es targets. Energies of correlated fragments from the isotopes with millisecond half lives, /sup 258/No and /sup 260/(104), were measured on-line by a special rotating-wheel instrument, while the others were determined off-line … more

Transverse energy and multiplicity from heavy ion collisions at 200 A GeV

Description: The successful acceleration of light ions at the CERN SPS and at the Brookhaven AGS opened the exciting field of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions for systematic studies. The first experiments were designed mainly to survey the reactions and to establish the essential features of the collisions. In this paper results from the WA80 experiment on transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity are reported. These two quantities are determined by most of the experiments and can be used t… more

Land use and energy

Description: This report provides estimates of the amount of land required by past and future energy development in the United States and examines major federal legislation that regulates the impact of energy facilities on land use. An example of one land use issue associated with energy development - the potential conflict between surface mining and agriculture - is illustrated by describing the actual and projected changes in land use caused by coal mining in western Indiana. Energy activities addressed i… more

Some potential material supply constraints in solar systems for heating and cooling of buildings and process heat. (A preliminary screening to identify critical materials)

Description: Nine Solar Heating and Cooling of Buildings (SHACOB) designs and three Agricultural and Industrial Process Heat (AIPH) designs have been studied to identify potential future material constraints to their large scale installation and use. The nine SHACOB and three AIPH systems were screened and found to be free of serious future material constraints. The screening was carried out for each individual system design assuming 500 million m/sup 2/ of collector area installed by the year 2000. Also, t… more

Measurement of parallel ion energy distribution function in PISCES plasma

Description: The PISCES facility is used to conduct controlled plasma-surface interaction experiments. Plasma parameters typical of those found in the edge plasmas of major fusion confinement experiments are produced. In this work, the energy distribution of the ion flux incident on a material surface is measured using a gridded energy analyzer in place of a material sample. The full width at half maximum energy distribution of the ion flux is found to vary from 10 eV to 30 eV both hydrogen and deuterium pl… more

Effect of group III A and IV A element substitutions (M) on the hydrogen dissociation pressures of LaNi/sub 5-x/M/sub x/ hydrides

Description: Ternary modifications of the hydrogen absorbing alloy LaNi/sub 5/ have been found to have a large effect on the hydrogen dissociation pressure of the corresponding hydride. A series of alloys LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/M/sub 0/ /sub 4/ (M = Al, Ga, In, Sn) were studied to establish the effect of various group III A and IV A element substitutions on the dissociation pressures of their corresponding hydrides. Results were extended to include the alloys LaNi/sub 4/ /sub 6/Si/sub 0/ /sub 4/, LaNi/sub 4/ /s… more

Inorganic concepts relevant to metal binding, activity, and toxicity in a biological system

Description: The purpose of this paper is to review selected physical and inorganic concepts and factors which might be important in assessing and/or understanding the fact and disposition of a metal system in a biological environment. Hopefully, such inquiries will ultimately permit us to understand, rationalize, and predict differences and trends in biological effects as a function of the basic nature of a metal system and, in optimal cases, serve as input to a system of guidelines for the notion of Chemi… more

Results from the RACE (Ring ACceleration Experiment) Compact Torus Acceleration Experiment

Description: RACE (Ring ACceleration Experiment) is a proof-of-principle experiment aimed at demonstrating acceleration of magnetically confined compact torus plasma rings to directed kinetic energies well in excess of their magnetic and thermal energies. In the course of the first year of operation the following have been observed: successful formation of rings in the RACE geometry; acceleration of rings with large forces, F/sub accelerate/ approx.F/sub equilibrium/ without apparent degradation of the ring… more

Hydrogen diffusion and trapping in bcc and fcc metals

Description: The fundamental aspects of the metal--hydrogen systems are described. The large number of anomalous properties are the reason for continuous scientific effort. The time scale of hydrogen motion is extremely short. The characteristic frequencies of the localized modes of hydrogen in Ta, Nb, or V are in the order of 10/sup -14/ sec (energies between 0.1 to 0.2 eV); the jump frequencies for H-diffusion at elevated temperatures in those systems are between 10/sup +12/ to 10/sup +13/ sec/sup -1/. Estimating the economic and demographic impacts of solar technology commercialization on US regions

Description: The purpose of this study is to develop a framework through which these regional economic and demographic impacts of solar technology commercialization can be analyzed. Two models comprise the basis of this framework - a national input/output model and an interregional econometric model, the National-Regional Impact Evaluation System (NRIES). These models are used to convert projected sales of solar energy systems to gross output concepts, and to evaluate the impacts associated with these sales… more

Spontaneous fission of /sup 259/Md

Description: The mass and kinetic energy distributions of fission fragments from the spontaneous fission of th newly discovered nuclide /sup 259/Md were obtained. /sup 259/Md was identified as the E. Analysis of federal incentives used to stimulate energy consumption

Description: The purpose of the analysis is to identify and quantify Federal incentives that have increased the consumption of coal, oil, natural gas, and electricity. The introductory chapter is intended as a device for presenting the policy questions about the incentives that can be used to stimulate desired levels of energy development. In the theoretical chapter federal incentives were identified for the consumption of energy as Federal government actions whose major intent or result is to stimulate ene… more

Design, construction, and testing of the direct absorption receiver panel research experiment

Description: A panel research experiment (PRE) was designed, built, and tested as a scaled-down model of a direct absorption receiver (DAR). The PRE is a 3-MW{sub t}DAR experiment that will allow flow testing with molten nitrate salt and provide a test bed for DAR testing with actual solar heating. In a solar central receiver system DAR, the heat absorbing fluid (a blackened molten nitrate salt) flows in a thin film down a vertical panel (rather than through tubes as in conventional receiver designs) and ab… more
