Conservation and economic development

Description: This oral presentation is about the Espanola Power Savers Project which involves both the utility and for the community. I'm going to spend much of my time today discussing why this project makes sense for the community, but I would like to start with a brief word about why community-based conservation makes sense for utilities. A number of reasons are listed to show why conservation is today's energy resource of choice. But if, for a moment, we take that as a given and ask why community-based … more

Impact of solar-energy development: the aggregate impact on basic economic objectives

Description: Two categories of incentives for the development of solar energy are described: those that increase the benefits associated with the ownership of a solar energy system and those that reduce the cost of the system. The impact of two alternative (or complementary) programs are presented. The discussion distinguishes between short-run (one to five years) and long-run (over five years) impacts expected to result from the installation of passive solar designs on existing housing stock. Impacts assoc… more

How can energy-efficient structures compete in an inefficient energy market

Description: The only way resources can be efficiently allocated in our market system is if prices of resources, goods, and services properly reflect their true value to society. However, because of (a) imperfections in the pricing mechanisms that currently influence private-sector decision making; (b) the difference in planning horizons between individuals and government; and (c) the external benefits that would accrue to society from energy-conscious decision making by individuals, it is apparent that the… more

Tevatron Electron Lenses: Design and Operation

Description: The beam-beam effects have been the dominating sources of beam loss and lifetime limitations in the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider [1]. Electron lenses were originally proposed for compensation of electromagnetic long-range and head-on beam-beam interactions of proton and antiproton beams [2]. Results of successful employment of two electron lenses built and installed in the Tevatron are reported in [3,4,5]. In this paper we present design features of the Tevatron electron lenses (TELs), d… more

Orbital HP-Clouds for Solving Schrödinger Equation in Quantum Mechanics

Description: Solving Schroedinger equation in quantum mechanics presents a challenging task in numerical methods due to the high order behavior and high dimension characteristics in the wave functions, in addition to the highly coupled nature between wave functions. This work introduces orbital and polynomial enrichment functions to the partition of unity for solution of Schroedinger equation under the framework of HP-Clouds. An intrinsic enrichment of orbital function and extrinsic enrichment of monomial f… more

Energy planning with solar and conservation: individual values and community choice

Description: Conflict among the priorities of individuals, private sector businesses, and government entities makes the transition to a renewable energy-resource base a difficult one. These conflicts are intensified by the overwhelming number of externalities created by the actions of each of these decision making groups. This paper explores the nature of some of these conflicts and externalities and gives an illustrative example of the benefits to be derived from community energy planning. Community energy… more

A 3 TeV Muon Collider Lattice Design

Description: A new lattice for 3 TeV c.o.m. energy with {beta}* = 5mm was developed which follows the basic concept of the earlier 1.5 TeV design but uses quad triplets for the final focus in order to keep the maximum magnet strength and aperture close to those in 1.5 TeV case. Another difference is employment of combined-function magnets with the goal to lower heat deposition in magnet cold mass and to eliminate bending field free regions which produce 'hot spots' of neutrino radiation that can be an issue… more
